Running in period
I'm pondering the obvious, having previously owned a run in S2k and experienced the lovely sound of VTEC engagement & thrust, I have to limit myself (and the wife) for the 625 mile drive in period, (currently 415 miles so its not too far away). Whilst frustrating as I know what I'm missing I want to look after it as best as is possible as I want it to last & I may have a family member already willing to buy it off me in 2 years!
I presume most people begin to nail the engine after 625 miles as the handbook says keep it below 5500 rpm for the first 625 then doesn't mention anything after that... But has anyone actually stuck to the 1000 extra revs per 100 miles in VTEC as per the tech FAQ?
Honestly?

I've always been a firm believer in running hard and fast from day one.
ie let it warm up fully then drive hard and gradually through each gear.
This has been said to bed the piston rings in under pressure, rather than develop a lazy engine.
There are people from both camps and you'll find all sorts of pages on it.

Did the first 600 miles with only the occasional 'accidental' vtec. Nailed it after that and did a track day after 1k miles. The engine uses no oil at all and definately has a bit more puff than the then engine in my last S which was replaced during my ownership. Running in the new one n my last car i was gentle with it for the first 1k miles and it used a fair bit of oil.

Have always run all my cars in very carefully following the manufacturers requirements to the letter. After that I build the revs up slowly for another 2000 - 3000 miles before I use peak revs.

I ran mine in according to the FAQ. It's done 5600 miles, now and not used a drop of oil. The other thing I do is to let it warm up fully before VTEC'ing too...

It's agony but I let it run in properly.
With an engine that revs this highly you can't take the chance - for the sake of a couple of weeks or one long drive it's not worth rushing it.
You'll be rewarded in the long run

My car was previously owned by Honda when I bought it.
Do you think the driver(s) who did the running in were careful
I doubt it
But, since I have owned it (10k now) it has not required any top ups and the oil is always a honey amber colour even after a years driving
I think you can do more harm being over careful.
Just drive it normally, good varied driving, the odd vtec to to seat the rings from day one.

Mine too was an ex-Honda demo.
Also wonder how carefully it may have been run in. Guess I know the answer to that.
(More) Typical for a pre 04 it does drink a few hundred ml of oil per 1k miles
