Now you need to apply them carefully, and i'd still waxoyl the arches, but yes, then they do offer protection.
I'd be looking at replacing them once every 3 years or everytime you take them off.

I did this with mine recently but put the waxoyl in the trim and then put it on!

Like Bass says the fronts are more of an issue as they are not well protected
The strips are only a tenner each so don't worry about that.
Take them off, check for rust. Clean the inside of the arch - you'll be amazed how much mud is there - get some new strips, waxoyl he arch, refit new strip.
10 minutes per side

So i checked mine today - all fine except rear o/s theres some rust starting to bubble under the paint. It's not bothering me at the moment as its a tiny patch and you cant really see it at all but I dont want it getting worse. Is there a way to stop it getting worse - short of stripping it all back and repainting?

The longer you leave it, the more it is going to cost i'm afraid.
Another place to watch out for is those rubber things under the bonnet and boot which you can screw in our out to adjust for correct support of the lids.
The water is held in the threads of the rubber and starts the rust off.
Best thing it remove, spray waxoyl over the threads and screw them back in.
Note or mark the position before removing although there is a ridge left by the metal so you can feel a slight 'click' when you return it to the same position
One of mine needed some acid and zinc primer to remove the rust.
Better to treat with waxoyl before it starts.
