Default S2000 Engine in Quantum Kitcar

I have an S2000 engine fitted to my Quantum Xtreme kit car. It has a Rotex supercharger fitted by TTS at Silverstone and produces approx 295bhp.

An engine noise has recently developed, the source of which I am unable to identify. My best description is that it is a low frequency, bearing-like rumble which I don't think is engine speed related. It can be heard clearly when listening (with screwdriver to ear) to the engine oil filter and external oil pipes. It can also be felt through the bulkhead. It becomes more noticeable as the engine warms up.

The engine has an external oil cooler, and the oil filter is mounted on the bulkhead. I've taken the baffled sump off and so far as I can see the pump, pump drive chain and tensioner are fine. The engine has probably completed about 22,000 miles from new.

If anyone can shed any light on what might be causing this noise I would be very glad to hear their suggestions.

Regards

To my knowledge Robin, there is nothing in that engine which rotates at a fixed speed.
So if you say its apparently not rpm related then that doesnt seem plausible.

My money would be on main bearings.
Perhaps there is an issue with the modified cooler/remote filter assembly?
You have an oil pressure and temperature gauge?

Unfortunately there is a well documented QA issue with later F20C engines.
Its been largely buried by Honda, but its a major problem on 2009 engines and they are still failing.
How old is it?

Steve

To the best of my knowledge the engine is probably 2006/2007, maybe earlier. The oil pressure is very good at around 85-90psi and oil temperature around 80 deg C. under normal driving conditions.
I can't be sure about the rpm related issue. I agree, it dosn't sound right for an engine vibration not to be speed related. But I am sure that the noise is being transmitted through the oil system. It's not apparent from the engine block itself.
Thanks for the reply.

Could you post up a YouTube vid of the noise?

It might also be worth checking out the under the hood section of the main forum. There are loads of “what the hell is this noise” threads on there.

As far as i can tell its the big end or main bearings.

I will tell a friend to have a look at this who is quite familiar with s2K engines.

Did you check the compression lately? Could you do it?

Please post a you tube video if you can.
