Ths S is not great off the lights so if that is really important then you are looking at the wrong car.

Personally I think this will be more up your street

Also have you got an insurance quote yet? That may put you off.

Good luck.... I fear you will need it!

[QUOTE=untitled,Aug 15 2006, 06:13 PM] Hi, I'm fairly new here on joining but have been reading posts for around 6months also on the Type R forums.

I'm looking at getting a S2000 when i return from Hols probably in Nov. I've been looking for a 02-03 plate hardtop preferably black or silver through the summer but haven't seen anything around my budget So hopefully Nov will be the month.

Now i know about the reports of the handling etc with the S but we all like to have a blast now and then so i was wondering if owners could help give me an idea of which cars the s will beat from the light. Just so that when i'm thinking of having a go i dont get mugged off. If anyone has gone up against any of these could you sate how you fared. Cheers
These are the cars

Boxter
Boxter S
Audi TT 1.8 (Which my mate has)
Audi TT 3.2
Impreza
Nissan 350z (which my mate is getting)
Elise
VX220
Evo
MGF
MX5
Type R
ST
VXR
Z4
Z3
I think i can guess for most of these and know that obviously things like Carreras, M3s, M5s and most Evos will win but how did you do?

Just a bit of fun, i'm not a boy racer or anything and will be taking good care of my S when i get it.

I will

Using the term 'Impreza' is really not much use dude. A factory Spec C will hit 100mph from rest in about 11.8s whereas a 1.6GL won't..........ever! Firstly I will qualify you interpretation of 'beating' a little. If you want to know what's fastest of the lights then take all the cars with 4wd and bunch them at the top because in urban drags between lights you won't beat 4wd until above 40-50mph. In my experience most encounters are somewhere between the range of 30 and 130mph and therefore I will advise accordingly.

Within my specified range an S2000 will murder non-sti WRX's including bug, blob and eagle eye. PPP'd (Prodrive Performance Pack) examples will put up a far greater fight. I played with a 2003 STI in a random encounter and found the owner on Scoobynet and Scottish Scoobies - we agreed that I was gaining after 60mph or so (but very slowly). A PPP'd new age STI will leave an S2000. Classic shape scoobys are close but do lose out when rolling and the classic STI's, P1's, etc are fractionally faster. I raced a 275bhp STI5 at crail and we had the same terminal speed and close times but he was a little quicker due to his launch. On a roll there was a few metres in it, if that.

The S2000 is faster than both the old and the new Golf R32 although the newer one gives much more of a fight. The old ones can be passed with relative ease. (I raced the old one twice at crail and my uncle has a new one).

The boxter I've had no experience with but it depends on the version. You'll have most normal boxters but the boxter S will probably have you. All in all its going to be close.

All TT's are relatively easy to pull from with the exception of the 3.2 which will again give you quite a fair fight but I'd expect to prevail over the range I specified.

The nissan 350z is a real problem. I've not encountered one but there is a lot of evidence to suggest they are fractionally quicker. I'd expect to very slowly fall back but by nowhere near as much as the 10 bus lengths on the supposed stock vs stock video that circulates the net

The elise and VX220 is entirely model dependant - you will lose 0-60 to all of them!! The VX turbo and 111R + Exige will pull on you over the range specified with most other models running out of puff vs an S2000 at around 90-100mph and starting to fall back.

Evo's are entirely model dependant but as a rule of thumb you'll lose as most are 300bhp+ nowadays.

The MGF and MX5 aren't even worth mentioning as the S2000 destroys them!

The Type-R I am very qualified to comment on as I drove one for most of last week and as its my mates car we've compared over many different ranges. The S2000 is far faster to 30mph and far faster from 100mph+ However, from 30-100 the type-r gives a very good account of itself and the S2000 cannot pull much distance over this range. To shift them into the distance you have to be committed to losing your license in terms of the speeds you must call upon.

The ST and VXR should be much about the same as the Type-R but I have no direct experience - yet

Any modern day BMW with a geniune M-badge is going to beat you but the S2000 can give most of them a very reasonable run until about 100mph, but at that point the BMW is going to dissapear. I took a M3 CSL on and felt I kept it very respectable up to about 90 then I sensed if we had more road he was really going to gain momentum on me.

The real cars to watch are cars like the BMW 330i and other high-powered saloons as they are very good at the top end. You'll beat them in the lower speed ranges but if one of these is tailgaiting you at 70mph he'll still be very much there or there abouts at 150mph.

I've had spirited runs with a good number of sports/performance cars and have always been impressed with how well the S2000 has done. It's beaten a few I thought it would struggle with and kept up remarkably well with cars I expected to destroy me! The only car who's boots I couldn't lace was an R33 V-spec Skyline - he opened up football pitches on me between 60-1**mph!!!

The key thing is to play to the S2000's strengths. It's not good off the line unless you are very brutal with it but on the roll it is excellent and I personally admire its 50-120mph performance (top end of 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears)

However, there are two very important things you must understand.

1. If you have your roof down you will dramatically affect the acceleration of the S2000 and cars it would normally beat will keep up or even pass you!!
2. There is no margin for error when driving the S2000 flat out. If you change up 500rpm early in an STI scooby it'll make little/no difference as her fat torque curve is there to save you. Changing up 500rpm early in the S2000 will lose you car lengths. In short if you want 100% of its performance you have to give 100% effort - that's what I love about it

That made good reading mate! I've never actually come up against an S in my CTR but I bet it would be all down to the driver.
