Default S2K On Ice

Upon returning to my car this evening at the local swimming pool, I noticed an X5 'parked' in a slightly strange place in the car park. Thought little of it, got in my car and drove round her, only to look back to see some people running over to her car. I pulled over and got out, and four of us helped push the 2-tonne blancmange up the slight incline and out of the ice. She was spinning all four wheels, sliding sideways and generally making a mess of things, and once we pushed her clear she buzzed down her window and said "thanks very much, good job I've got a nice big car in this weather", with not a hint of sarcasm in her voice.

Couldn't work out whether she was jabbing at the throttle like she was stamping on a rat, or the X5's woeful 4wd system and inappropriate tyres were showing their true colours.

Personally me thinks that it's either auto box, poor tyre tread or more probably just poor technique. A higher gear and very little throttle will work in most situations, esp if you had no trouble in the S.

see it all the time where my parents live. not sure on the gradient, but very few cars seem to be able to make it up.

i've not once had any issue in various cars, yet people seem to leave their car at the bottom of the hill and walk their way home.

they seem to think that mashing the pedal will melt the snow/ice and make them have traction. they get about half way up which then gets a bit steeper and they start sliding down again

entertaining to watch, terifying if your car is below them no doubt.

all it would take is 10mins to tell and show them the error of their ways and they'd hopefully remember it for the rest of their lives!

I had a simlar scenario today much to my misfortune of having been cuaght in the heavy snow on my way back from Luton. Traffic was chocabloc as you would expect. I owe much of it to the stupid Mazda drive who just wheelspins his way up a low gradient road

As a result I thought great, my S wont fair much well but much to my surprise with ample tread on tyres and carfeul use of throttle I navigated my way up the road with little problem! What annoyed me even more was the guy in the mazda still proceeded to wheelspin and fishtail his way along the road so I'm thinking his car is simply not fit for the road conditions and he should just not drive!

I dont think the S is any more fragile then any other car out there, you just gotta be a bit more wise to it

I would have happily forfeited my exam and failed just so I would have to drive the S and conditions were far too dodge! But hey at least I passed my exam and made it home so it was worth the 2 hour gridlock!

Operator Error in the X5...

Winter tyres are apparantly what we all need but I bet less than 5% of road users have them, probably less. A mate uses them on his RS4 and earlier this year when we had a massive dump of snow, he went up roads that Jeeps and Landrovers were struggling to get, all without fuss.

That's the problem very few people have had the training or even the opportunity to learn to drive in snow and ice. So when they do have to drive in it they are clueless.
