Yoooooooo guys.
I'm local to Ashbourne Derbyshire and having issues after winter with my soft top. It goes down but not all the way so I can't get my hard top on I'm hearing it's maybe because of the elastic straps on the inside have gone baggy. Could this be the case? Want to get it ready for a few shows this year.
Most likely is the elastic straps that pull back on the middle bar of the top are worn and limp. Over time, this can result in the metal support bar not folding toward the back of the car properly. I met a gentleman at a car show who explained his top would not open all the way. He explained that he had purchased the Modifry strap replacements (I highly recommend you get a set) but was unclear on the directions for installing them. I told him to stop by my house and we would get him setup.
Once I had his car in front of me, I saw that the bar was way out of position and had to adjust it so it lined up with the seam in the top (this takes a little effort to get in back in place). We then followed the Modifry instructions to cut out the old worn straps and install the new ones. They have metal pins that go into the rivet holes and you have to fold the straps over themselves -- its hard to describe but the Modifry instructions are very clear on the process.
Go out and check the position of the bar and get it set properly. Order the new straps from Modifry (Note: the site has changed hands and delivery may be delayed somewhat). In the meantime, every time you put down the top you should reach up and push the bar toward the rear of the car as it opens to get it to fold back properly.
If it’s an OEM soft top (with Honda stamped glass) they are somewhat “short” on material and can be awkward to completely fold down as a result. They will also suffer from shrinkage. These 2 factors combined with old elastics are all inter-playing on the issue you’re experiencing.
When I fitted a new Robbins roof to one of my cars, the first thing I noticed was how much better it folded down. (slightly more material allow the whole roof to fold down easier, and with less resultant wear aswell)
Just manually push the roof bar the same direction the elastic strap would have pulled it and the roof will fold flat as it should. Barring damage to the roof frame.
