Yep. agree with Euan also.
Definitely avoid John O Groats unless you just want to say you've been there!
A pity you don't have more time, that's one hell of a journey in a few days.
If you are going back via A93 from Braemar I would consider turning right on the B950 (only a couple of miles long) then right again onto the A924 across the Moulin Moor and into Pitlochry, a nice little town. From here you can join the A9 south and you're about 30 mins to Perth.

Anything north of the Trossachs and you need to adopt a different approach to estimating time for distance.
250 miles a day is about the limit on the WBTs and that's usually a 9:30-10 leave and 5-6 finish, although admittedly we are seeking out the less "direct" routes

On meets you tend to stop longer for lunch and for photo stops, and it always takes a while to get going int he morning. You ought to be away by 8am if your on your own.
You can make pretty rapid progress as the roads are better than you might expect, although knowing them helps a fair bit.
I left Plockton at 9am one day, headed up to Ullapool around the coast ( but not via the Bealach and Applcross), popped into Achiltibuie, carried on further up the coast and would have been in Tongue for 5.30 had it not been for a blind Volvo driver. I was probably going slower than the average WBT speed.
Also be aware that while there are plenty filling stations in villages along the way, they will not open later than 5 or 6, so that's another reason not to drive at night.
Only SUL on that route north of Fort William is Ullapool BTW until you get back to Inverness.

Euan's route is spot on.
In one day, starting from Fort William, I made it up the A82, across the A87 to kyle of lochalsh, did bealach to Applecross, lunched there, then up past gairloch, poolewe, then inland on the A835 to inverness, then hacked down the A9, got to coldstream in the scottish borders to pick my girlfriend and was home in Leeds by 11pm. Fantastic day.
Seriously, you won't regret it, the highlands are just stunning.
And my g/f parents are from John o@groats. It's a complete shithole. Anything East of the Helmsdale to Bighouse road isn't really worthwhile.

I headed for Scotland with my last car and will definatley go back in the S. I also remember Applecross being a highlight. Also if you fancy a stop you can stay overnight in Applecross in a Wigwam. If you have time a detour around Loch Leven is good.
Loch Leven
Road to Applecross
Overnight in Applecross
ENJOY!

I agree that's a fair few miles to do, in a short period.
Andy W, I'd be up for doing this also, if you fancied doing a convoy.

We could try and pull together a meet over a weekend at some point with the northerners and the jocks
