Default Scuttle Shake ?

Hi Folks

1st post on this forum, so please be gentle.

I've tried a search and haven't found anything definitive so thought i 'd ask the guys and gals in the know

i have recently bought an immaculate , completely standard 05 silverstone grey, one owner car.

It has been very well kept and cared for by main dealer and more recently roy in congelton (active on here i think ?/)

Having run it for 300 miles in wet and dry conditions on gentle runs and more spirited drives through my favourite roads around the peak district

i keep feeling what i can only describe as scuttle shake when i hit potholes, or am pushing on through the twisities.

My passengers don't seem to notice it but i can feel it through the steering wheel and seat.

I have another weekend car, a lotus exige, which has a few track focused bits, adjustable 2 way ohlins, motorsport ARB, brakes etc. so its screwed down really tight
but i just didn't expect to get any shake at all in the S2000 as it was obviously designed to be an open top, unlike the mercs, bmw's, audis i have been in that appear to be made of custard.

Am i just been to critical, or could it be that i need to start upgrading bits ?

I was hoping to keep this car OEM as it will be my occasional daily driver so i don't want it to be bullet hard and like the idea thats its a bit softer than the exige, as my wife won't actually go in that with me !!

Any thoughts, comments ideas welcome.

Hoping to get to a local meet before winter descends, as a couple of hours kicking tyres and finding out about all the stuff i should be doing to my new motor sounds like a very productive useof my spare time

Thanks

Rich

It has passive rear wheel steering, which can manifest itself as bumpsteer, especially if the wheel alignment is out. The S is fairly sensitive to wheel alignment, so get that checked/sorted, assuming that is the sensation you're trying to describe.

scuttle shake typically manifests itself via a vibrating rear view mirror.

your car is 10 years old - I think it is reasonable to expect a few rattles and creaks.

if you "uprate" the suspension with firmer springs etc, you can expect worse - although no doubt one of suspension gurus will be along to contradict me and put me right.

Where are you located? Might be worth meeting up with someone with an s2000 and do a comparison.

Hi folks

Thanks for the replies.

the feel is more of a "tremor", is the best way i can describe it, so whilst i wasn't aware of the prws I'm not sure it is this as it happens on straights as well if you catch a pothole.

the mirror moves a little, but as before nothing like as much as I've felt in a bmw convertible..

would be good to meet for sure and see if its just me / my car or similar to others.
I'm based in endon near to leek, are you south cheshire robin ?

the car has covered 31k and feels tight everywhere else, bar the odd squeak, its like a bentley compared to the lotus !!!

You have a 2005 S so good tyres and a proper GEO set up should be all you need to cure it.

Yeah I am in Crewe, you should head to Daytona garage in Congleton on Saturday to meet some of the locals and they can give you their opinion on your scuttle shake.

Sounds like Roy is Ray from Daytona so will know the car if it's been looked after by him

Sounds like it might have been Soundwave's old car.

Not with 31k and only 1 previous owner

I'm hopeful that what you're describing is just an unfamiliarity with the car in combination with experience of your rock solid Exige, as the S2000 has a pretty rigid chassis; maybe its just bits of trim / tyre movement giving the impression of scuttle shake?

We'll be having a Pub Meet on the 24th September in Bosley near Macclesfield too if you can make that, they'll be plenty of us there and we can give you our opinion on how the car feels.
