Default Security

The S seems to have a poor reputation for security - Insurance Group 20, unlike the Z4 which is 18 for example. It doesn't score as well in the Thatcham security tests as most other soft-tops, and I'm intrigued to know why. The factory-fitted alarm/immobiliser is Thatcham approved, so what's the deal?

I can see that its probably not a good idea to plaster a car's security weak spots all over the interweb, so if there are any well known holes that I should be plugging, maybe someone can PM me?

I'm sure someone will help with this, but for now you have PM.

I think the group 20 as opposed to the group 18 of a Z4 probably has very little to do with security and more to do with people parking them in hedges.

the weak point on most moderns is the keys

just about any immobilser will defeat amateurs

so you and the keys become the target

I don't believe the S is valuable enough to be targetted by pros for resale and it's not big enough for a little team to go on the rob - as well as being too conspicuous

so your issue is opportunists/burglars

Not sure about the > 04 cars but the immobiliser in the < 04 cars was built into the ECU.

3rd party ECUs, such as the Mugen, don't have an immobiliser.

It is a simple job to remove and replace an ECU.

the highly occuring 'wet' incidences on the road have pushed the S to GP 20.

The S has *always* been in group 20.

Question: How many people on here have had their S2000 stolen without the thief having the key?
Answer: 0 I reckon

therefore the car is just as safe as any other similar softtop

Doesn't the cost to repair factor in the groupings too?

Are Jap parts expensive?
