Thumbs up Slight tear to roof (both sides)

On both sides of the MY03 I have just bought, there is a slight tear/rip in the corner next to the passenger/drivers window at the bottom where the roof meets the bodywork.

Here is a close up of the passenger side damamge:

And this is the drivers side:

Now I don't think the car is taking on water (I've only just got it!) but it doesn't smell damp and there are no signs of any water damage.

What does concearn me is if this will get worse with further operation of the roof, as I don't want to end up with a problem. Has anyone else experienced this kind of tear? If so what did you do to repair it or at least stop it getting worse?

Thanks in advance for any tips or pointers!

Hi Karl,

I had similar tears in the same place on my roof, I also had the usual wear marks higher up where the frame had rubbed the roof, to compound this some nice person had ran a blade of some sort along the roof directly over the passenger seat. So I took it to a vehicle upholsterer in Sheffield to price me up a new roof, to my amazement he said that he could sort the old one out, as well as sorting out the bolsters and some worn leather on the seats.

I collected the car the following day and he had fixed the lot.

I didn't get any photo's of the state they were in before, but I can post some of the after if you wish..

In my opinion £330 well spent.

I had the same problem but the tears in mine were far worse. I ended up going to jack smiths in the end and was money well spent.

Yours look like they can be repaired though. Some would say patches with the same material, others may suggest some sort of adhesive that would bind the material together.

I thought I read a thread recently where someone had qouted £280 but I could be wrong. If it's still £260 then even better

See that little metal piece just to the rear of the tear? That's what starts the tear off - you need patches on the inside of the roof to protect the material from it.

Worth bearing in mind if you have a good roof or fit a new one.

Same happened to mine on the passenger side. Thimble, a curved needle, some waxed thread and some rubber sealant later and they are all gone.

Don't get me wrong, it's tight, you have to open and close the roof and you will get a needle through the finger, but worth a shot before shelling out for a new roof!!
