SLK-Class
I saw an SLK in Cubanite Silver (Platinum), so I dropped in at our dealer to take a look.
Their one was inevitably in Iridium silver (AKA Not Fcuking Silver Again). The car is quite pretty and not too huge.
Its face has a confused identity. Remove the Studebaker Champion propeller cowl and it looks a bit like a Citroen Picasso, which is odd. The deck line finishes suspiciously like a Lexus convertible, but so does a 6-series. I think it is the "me too" rear lights.
The interior is a high point. The fascia has a Ferrari-like alcantara covering. This one was swathed in black leather, with silver painted switches all over it. The effect is high-end and only spoiled by the silver paint round the instrument nacelles. The effect is RX-8 (well absolutely everything now, TBH). Really, they should be brushed ally, but then so should all those silver switches and things, especially for the price.
The seats are height adjustable. This is good, for two reasons:
1. It shows that those in the S2000 should be also. The high driving position is the worst thing about the S2K.
2. It needs to be! The cowl and waistline are so high, there is no way shorties could drive it. One feels cocooned (although it is far more spacious at shoulder level than the S2K)
The roof is very clever. It is unbelievably flat when folded and there is a really big boot space beneath. M-B are getting this Vario-roof (I thought that was their van made in Duesseldorf, but never mind) thing truly sorted.
Speaking of vans, the steering wheel is big as usual and sloppy at rest and so is the brake pedal.
I picked up a brochure and price list. Do so, if they'll deign to let you have one. The diatribe from the marketing wonks is hilarious! "By the laws of mathematics, a curve is a line which gradually deviates form the straight. By the laws of the heart, it's simply a moment of pleasure" Classic pseuds' corner. Since when was Bremen in Colombia?
All in all, a "classy" (adopt Essex Wife's accent) piece of kit that should do well. This SLK350 had about

A mate of mine test drove one yesterday......the 3.5 litre.
He drives a Lotus Elise (111R is it?)
He was very impressed with the SLK. Both from a driving point of view and interior design etc.
Extremely powerful apparently, and reckons it knocks the socks of the Boxster S.
I do so hope that's true!

Just seen one in the flesh for the first time at my local dealer. It was Black but it certainly didn't float my boat. Very high at the back, looked a bit like an old TR7
I agree, it seems that dark colours make it look like one of those Lexus things around the rear.
The two I saw were lighter and had an almost S2K-ish look from a distance. The AMG kit helps immeasurably.
Having said that, I bothered to sit in it. I just cannot go near a Z4.
