Actually 6 minutes extra, but the principle stands.

My girlfriend owns and trains horses. Has her own livery in fact.

On this subject... She always tells me to slow down on country roads, in case i hit a horse on a bend. When its a 60 speed limit. When theres no horse signs. Answer: GTFO.

The general problem isn't the slow-moving horse box, is the ones stacked up behind who won't overtake - doubling/tripling/quadroupling the length of the obstacle. What we locally call "biddy convoys". We have loads of hose boxes here in the 'wolds 'cos we have loads of racing stables and Cheltenham, Stratford and Newbury races at each corner of the AONB. They're a fact of life and we accept them and their limitations because they are a big part of the local economy - and importantly, they know what it's like for us and pull over from time to time when its safe to.

Unlike the biddy convey members, who don't ever pull over, don't ever speed-up, don't ever over-take and don't ever look in any one of their three mirrors.

My recently discovered and largely fail-safe solution to biddy-convoys has been to buy a phenomenal car that sails me past them quickly and safely when this brutal acceleration that it produces at 6k+ revs kicks-in.

You may be familiar with it

Ok, sometimes it doesn't work - but it works a flippin' sight more often than it did in the old family-waggon - I count my blessings.

7 posts and this dude talks sense! ^^
If you can just overtake a line of cars, it is your duty.
I hate horses with a passion and they shouldn't be allowed to be ridden on roads. There are so many fields FFS!

Horses are disgusting so any opportunity to kick my Vtec through my chavvy loud exhaust is much welcomed.

Love this post

Biddy convoys - what a great phrase. And that indeed was part of the problem. I do understand the need for horseboxes to drive slowly (despite having no interest in our four legged friends whatsoever), but when you have a tail of at least 50 cars its time to pull over.
And I would loved to have overtaken but it was impossible as there was a constant stream coming the other way. Perhaps I need to find somewhere else to live with no horses, clear open roads and no biddies...

Didn't realise this thread would stir such strong feelings!

What is the speed limit for an HGV on an A road single carriageway, its 40mph, so how are they to whizz along unless they break the Law and collect fines and points. We can all merrily sail along at 60 mph on an A road with the national speed limit.

Some serious intolerance here.

Maybe only young persons with sharp reactions and the ability to drive racy sports cars at break neck speeds should be allowed on the roads during the day, during rush hour and at weekends. Oh and absolutely no animal transport at all, so no burgers etc for you lot, or horse steaks.

Tommy...I agree to some point about them being ridden on roads. Unfortunately areas where they can exercise etc are only connected by roads, so it is a necessity. I really do wish the owners had to pick their sh1t up though...it's sodding dangerous!

If the queue was 'at least 50 cars' long you wouldn't have been able to see it was a horsebox that was causing the tailback, so lets not over-exaggerate

I'd love the roads to be clear of any other traffic, but it isn't going to happen. I just accept the facts of life and try not to get irate about them.

For you however Beeleaver, perhaps Mars is a viable alternative?

Sorry I thought you said you knew the A272? The stretch between Cowfold and Bolney has 2 very long straight sections and I do look in the mirror (as opposed to the biddies). Ok, so I didn't count 50 cars, but how many do you think fit in a 1/2 miles stretch nose to tail?
It was only meant to be a bit of a let off steam thread having trundled along for 6 miles at tractor speed after another day at the madhouse. No, Mars wouldn't work, not enough oxygen for the air intake You can't get rid of me that easily...
