Default Sorn

My tax runs out at the end of Jan, looking at the weather I’ve decided to Sorn it for a month or two.
My plan is to wait for a nice day and then just ring up and tax it and go for a drive.
It might even be in Feb so I save nothing with the Sorn – it just seems silly paying for Tax if it’s not going anywhere.

Does anyone know for sure if I can Tax it over the phone then go for a drive without the ticket on the screen?

Depends if its worth the hassel for a ~£30 saving, and insurance is still to pay for?

I don't know about 'phone. I used the SORN form at my local PO to re-tax.

When I re-taxed, I had to pay in full for the incomplete month.

Therefore unless you want to throw away any tax,

it's best to retax from the 1st of a month.

(Which isn't the freedom you want!)

If you don't have a tax disc in the window the police can still do you for failure to display even if the vehicle is taxed. You'd have to go down to the post office if you wanted to go out for a blast

I contemplated this and decide it wasn't worth the hassle and stuck to a years tax.

You must be allowed to drive an untaxed car, or how would you get the car to get it's MOT done once it's been SORNed?

AFAIK, you are allowed to drive your car to a pre-booked MOT appointment. Once you have the MOT cert you must go to the post office and re-tax before driving the car again.

It’s not a big planned thing.
It’s just that the tax runs out at the end of Jan otherwise I wouldn’t even consider it.
It just seemed odd to tax a car when then odds are that I won’t be driving it for the month.

It’s not a huge amount of cash of course, but there’s a certain principle about not giving the tax man any more of my money if I don’t need to.

And, well, £30 is £30.
It just seems silly to waste it.
