Default Stuck thermostat or something else

I had this a while back, thought it was a glitch but its returned.

Car is more than fully warmed up, i noticed something was awry when the AFR was really rich and was jumping about. Monitored the coolant temp and its up from its usual rock steady 86-88c, its fluctuates slowly between 94-105c (generally around a median of 95c) at one point 112/114c! but didn't put 4 bars on until 114c!

Have looked at the expansion tank and thats way way past the max mark, and with the car running the top rad hose is hot but the bottom is cold.

What do folk think?, Stuck thermostat?

What temps should the fans start kicking in too?

I've never changed one on the S but is it difficult to remove?

If anyone has a low mileage good thermostat, rad cap and switch - I'll take them of you, PM me.

As usual, the car does this to me when i have an important meeting i need to attend next week

Thanks

Could be a knackered thermostat, maybe a blocked rad as an option too?

Most possible stuck thermostat as the top rad hose is hot and the bottom cold. The thermostat is not so easy to change it as is the rad switch if this is the problem.

Oh great

Can it not be done with just a socket set? Looking into now, doesn't 'look' too difficult but maybe access is a problem?

Cheers

It's under the inlet manifold. If you have access to ramps and can go from underneath it's not too bad. Going in from the top you need childs hands, girly arms and 3 elbows. Oh and an eye on a stalk.

Lol, it's only two bolts but looks like a bit of a barsteward to do.

No ramps, bit axle stands and jack.

Just take the belt and alternator off you can do it from the top then, and my cash in on the thermostat, had two go on my old CRX one stuck shut one open, bet it's the same part. You should be able to get one at a motor factor instead of paying eye watering Honda prices.

Does the fan come on, if not then it's the switch. If the fan does come on it's probably the thermostat. The thermostat really is difficult to get access to and I gave up and got honda to do it.

Although it might be worth draining the system to get rid of any contaminates in there (that could of caused the switch/thermostat to corrode) and get the lower rad hose off it might be easier to access the thermostat?

If you take the connector for the fan switch off, on the fan side bridge the connector with a split pin (or similar) it should force the fan to come on.

I think thats how to do it anyway, i haven't done it for a very long time

I'm having similar problems and that's exactly who you check the fan unplugg the fan switch and just bridge them with the ignition on of course and the fans should come on.
