Default Tick, Tick.....

Hi All,

I have this ticking noise that appears to be getting worse. The following are the symptoms: only happens on warm idle, it appears to go away when rev'ed above 2k rpm, noise sometimes disappears when it settles at idle again. It does not happen all the time, maybe 1/3 of the time im stopped and idling I can hear it. Noise appears to come from the intake side of the engine.

I'm thinking its not TCT, as Ive had that problem before and a new TCT was fitted (anyway its a different sort of ticking sound). Could it be valves or injectors?

I brought it to the mechanic a day after I first heard it but couldn't reproduce the sound at the garage, going to drop over again at the weekend and hopefully he will get to hear it. In the meantime anybody have any ideas?

Car Details:
126,000 KM ~ 78,000 miles.
Last services at 75,000 miles.
TCT replaced at 65,000 miles.
Oil is not low!!
Valve adjustment has not been done in my life with the car, so it is due.
No loss of power, and it pulls fine though the whole rev range.

I had something similar. However it appeared at 15k miles.

Turned out to be a faulty oil pump which led to little end rattle.

A new engine fixed it.

I hope im your case its the TCT again.

TCT defo. Although that is a short term fix, if you've recently had it replaced then I reckon your chain has stretched and new guides/chain are the only long term fix. Not cheap though, best get the butt lube out.

Plenty of "guides" (pardon the pun) to get this resolved, perhaps for at least the short term if not longer. It is most certainly the chain occasionally touching the guides, something that is most common with a warm engine if your TCT isn't operating as it should.

I sorted mine over 3 weeks ago, been fine ever since and not a peep from the chain.... Get that worm gear roughed up!

Thanks for the input.

When I changed the TCT before the noise was more of a slow ticking sound, like the card in bicycle spokes, although this may sound like it in the video it is defiantly a different noise.

I guess my next course of action is to sandblast the TCT to rule it in or out, and if this fixes it, albeit short term then I can plan to replace the chain.

I use Castrol Edge 5W40 TD oil.

My TCT has always produced a 'ticking' rather than a 'clacking' sound which some others describe. I've had a couple of new TCTs and sand blasted. All fixes seem to be temporary. Now I have new guides, sprocket and chain ready to fit when I get some time!
