Default Tips for your first S2K service

Beofre buying my S2k I have never owned a car nice enough to bother getting it regularly serviced. Oftern this was something me and my dad did on a sunny afternoon. Well ok, my dad did on a sunny afternoon.

Anyway, having bought an S2000 in October, it is now approaching 50K miles, and is due for its next service (last one done at 41.5K).

I've had a look at the FAQ section but have a few more queries:

- my car was sold by a Toyota garage last May and was serviced by them (@41.5K). Obviously normally, there would be a service at 45K, but I am leavign it 9,000 miles after the previous service. Is there anything sepcial I need to ask for or do I jsut say I want a 'ful, 9000 mile service'?

- Am I right in thinking that there are options I can them request as well? Is this where I would ask to have my alignment checked for both front and rear - which I do want them to do.

- Is there any other things you would recommend the honda garage look at given that it is the first time I have had this car serviced (though it did have an RAC inspection before i bought it).

- Should I buy certain parts before going to the dealer - e.g. spark plugs? If so, which ones?

- Should I buy oil for the oil change, rather than let them put it in and charge me? Anything else you would suggest I purchase prior to the service to save a bit of cash?

- Should I ask them not to bother checking or filling washer bottle as I can do this myself and i'm sure at reduced cost?

- I see the FAQ section says I should ask for an HDS health check - what is this and what will it show?

If you have any other hints or tips they would be greatly appreciated. My car is under warranty with Toyota until May so it would be better the more thorough they are because if they pick anything up I should be able to get it covered under warranty.

Thanks for your help.

If I were you, I'd get the 54,000 mile service done.

This is a comprehensive service that should see you OK (the FAQ has a copy of the service schedule).

There are no 'options' as such for servicing - just extras, such chassis geometry (this is more than a simple alignment check), which you can request that they do (@

How old is the car? How many services has it had?

There is a different amount of work required depending on the service you are currently on.

For example if the service 41.5k was a late 36k or an early 45k it will change what needs to be done next.

If you are having the 54k service it is going to be more expensive than a previous one as it is more complex.

take a look here, it tells you what is included - spark plugs are only changed @27k and 54k for example.

You will save a few

Thanks for replys so far.

Its a 2001 Y, It had 9, 18, 27 and 36 by Honda garages, then it had a 41.5K done by the Toyota garage before they sold it. I do not know how comprehensive this service by Toyota was, though I did check when the warranty was transfered to me that for warranty purposes I would not have to get a service done until 50.5K.

Do you reckon therefore that I should ask them to do the 45K or the 54K service?

Thanks

go 54, consider the one they did an early 45.

Depending on the month the car was born you could hold out until 5 yrs after that date - especially considering it was only serviced 4 months back. do you know when this will be? Then again you pile the miles on from the sounds of it so 54k will roll on real soon I guess

If you intend to keep the car long term stick a K&N or similar airfilter in that never needs changing again, just cleaning.

As I have said, get the 54,000mile service done

It might cost a little more, but you'll at least have the knowledge and peace of mind that the car is in fine fettle.

From what you have said, the car was serviced 'early' by Toyota (at 41,000 instead of 45,000miles) - I'd get back on the recommended service schedule pronto.

I would also point out that the service schedule is every 9000miles or 12 months - whichever is sooner. Well worth remembering.

My car is a 2001, but has only done 30,000miles - its next service is the 45,000mile one i.e. car is 5 years old.

Sounds like the 54K one is the job.

But what is this HDI Health Check mentioned in the technical FAQ?

HDS health check is just when they plug the car into the diagnostics and give you a print out saying everything is ok.

Chances are that Toyota only did an oil and filter change, but that's no big deal ast the 45k service is not a big one. Although it does change the gearbox oil, which I'd be very suprised if Toyota did.

Ask for a 54k, also ask them to change your gearbox oil and your plugs, and make sure that they take the head off and check the valve tolerances. This is part of the service schedule but few garages do it without you asking unless they think there is a problem.

Expect that lot to set you back around
