Okay, I've decided to get either a Tracker or Trackstar fitted when my new car arrives.

A couple of questions I'd appreciate some advice on:

1. I'm going to get an aftermarket outfit to fit the package for me. Obviously when I pick the car up from the dealer it's not going to have it, but I'll have already arranged insurance for it on the basis that my S2K does have a Tracker/Trackstar fitted. I've read in other threads that some members have been told by their insurance companies to "get it fitted asap", presumably meaning that the insurance companies are letting them off the period between delivery and installation? Surely far too charitable for any self-respecting insurance company. It'd be interesting to know what would have happened if the worst happened and the car was taken during this window.

2. Has anyone got one of the upgraded packages (i.e. Tracker Monitor/Retrieve or Trackstar Guardian/Protector) and found that after their car was unfortunately taken, that the car *wasn't* retrieved within a matter of minutes/hours as claimed?

3. Also, anyone know what the difference between Trackstar Guardian and Protector is? Their extremely helpful explanation diagram on the RAC Trackstar website is reproduced below.

Any comments gratefully received!

Not NU-Direct, but the main Norwich Union did quote me a discount. Wait for it:.... less 2% on

I've seen grown blokes weep when they've looked at their recovered cars.. I wouldn't want mine returned and for that reason I wouldn't buy a tracker system. Why should I pay to further underwrite the risk rightfully borne by the insurance company?... I'm paying 'em enough already!

Where I think the car is really going to be at risk as time goes on is... seats! They're already a magnet to the ricer boys in the states to stick in their Civics. If you're really concerned, most insurance companies insist on an alarm anyway so buy the best you can, proxiimity sensors and all, or one of the systems that actually 'chirps' you on a pager if anyone is messing about. If they get past all that and take the car, I'd rather have the money thank you.

The other thing if it gets stolen and recovered is that it usually ends up on V-car register which means your retail value suffers greatly if your lucky enough to find someone who would buy a car thats on the V-car register.

My car came from Virgin cars without the alarm (they forgot it ) what concerned me the most during the fortnight I waited for them to arrange for it to be fitted was the fact that it was blindingly obvious to everyone whenever I locked the car and walked away, the indicators didn't flash i.e. it didn't have an alarm

This fact was noticed straight away by Billy Twoc across the road. He's thankfully moved away now (or hopefully behind bars eating porridge or being raped by Mr Big in the showers )

Its just for the insurance.

I have the RAC Trackstar but can't remember which option (the paperwork is at home). The difference between the Protector and The Guardian is that one is designed more for women. I think it has a button on it that you can press in the event of a breakdown and they send someone direct to your location. Thinking about it, you can work out which option is which because that one is the dearest one.

The Trackstar system scored with me because, if the car gets started without "my permission" it alerts a control centre who then alert the police and tell them where the car is. If I get car-jacked, I just phone up the control centre and the same thing happens.

I had it because NU insisted on it and gave me a 10% discount. I'm not with NU any longer and I don't get a discount off Tesco, but I'm still glad I have Trackstar on my car; I've invested a lot of cash and effort in terms of extras etc. in other words, it's MY car and if it gets taken, I want it back ASAP. I believe use of Trackstar results in an average recovery within 30 minutes of the theft.

LucasUK fitted it and the installation was fine.

I have had a Tracker to my last few Honda, it has been brilliant, would not know you've got it, until a friend shakes the car that that was enough to activate it. Yes I got a call asking did I know the whereabouts of my car. So it does work, luckily they stopped the Police response.

It was installed by a Tracker approved installer.

Hi

I've got a Navtrack system on my Impreza and I wouldn't recommend Navtrack, mainly because of the very poor response times I've had in the past.

I had to drive the car once without turning the system off and they didn't even ring me to find out if the car had been stolen. I left it 45 minutes(giving them plenty of time) and rang them up and was told "oh yes we are very busy at this time (6-30pm) , but we have it on the screen". Big deal.
The guy I spoke to was right bullshiter. I sent them an e-mail complaining and they didn't even reply, so I emailed them again and I got a letter back saying they were looking into it and since then the responses have been quicker.
I've tested the response time recently and it's been under 10 minutes in rush hour and under 5 minutes other times.
I personally want to know within 3 minutes.
If you have the right tools you could find the tracking device in 30 seconds and remove it in 5 minutes
Also the Navtrack system is GPS, so if you drive in to a tunnel the signal is lost, but it can be tracked until it enters the tunnel and the tracker has a memory of where its been.
