Default Tuning & Dynos & Stuff

Hi all

Was down at Abbey Motorsport today and bumped into about 5 CTR's all being dyno'd because the tuning guy from Hondata was going down there next week to re map their ECU's.

The guys said that they mainly specialise in Skylines but they are now doing Honda's as well.

Really useful as Dealers are truly crap at doing this kind of stuff and having somewhere nearby in London who can is great.

I will be using them more and the dealers less from now on.

Only problem is, Hondata don't currently support the S2000's ECU. They've done a prototype, but it's not made production yet. The EP3 Civic Type-R is lucky in this respect - the standard ECU is reflashable.

Brian, are you aware of any RR's "up North" that really know what they are doing? Although I own a Nissan 200SX which is now a bit modded I am struggling to find someone to set it up. The main problem is det. The tuners I have spoke to want to set it up on the road. The 200 uses different fuel maps in different gears...how the hell can you check this on the road?

Thank's

I wouldn't like to recommend anywhere for setting up a car they're not familiar with. I reckon you'd be better taking a trip to one of the 200SX specialists.

With regards setting up on the road. It can be done. Run a wideband O2 on the car (the tuner will have one), connect to listen for knock and drive while mapping. I't far from ideal for ignition tuning - rolling roads are much better for this. But for tweaking the fueling for drivability, it's often better than the rolling road - you've the exact normal driving conditions. For it to work well, the tuner needs to know the engine - otherwise they may not recognise knock, or other problems.

Mas per gear nice tunability - you can go for a cruise setup in higher gears, or go for smoother power delivery in lower gears at the expense of some power. That said, I'd assuming most tuners would ditch this and just optimise one map. It's likely that another factor in multiple maps from the manufacturer would be emissions - something tuners don't worry too much about.
