Thought I'd add to an old thread rather than create a new - does anybody have any thoughts on whether a manufacturers under-seat sub could be used - eg from an Alfa.
Should just be a case of adjusting a bit of wiring?
I assume they're passive, but I haven't really looked into it a great deal. I basically only thought about it because whilst scouring ebay for a kenwood / alpine unit, I noticed ones from vehicles selling for £10-15. Almost seems worth a try at that money.

If they are passive, then almost certainly not worth it as you'd need to add an amplifier, and then you might as well do it properly.
There is a Subaru/Panasonic item going very cheap (200568182594), and it looks like it's active, and there are instructions for splicing up the OEM connector here http://www.subaruforester.org/vbulletin/f7...onic-sub-33044/
I'd still advise getting a proper sub fitted if that's what you want to do, but before that, make sure you have excellent components fitted (I presume you still have coaxials as you've an older car)
So, in summary:
1) Fit some decent component speakers (get some newer doorcards)
2) add an amp to power them
3) get a sub and amp

I had the halfords undr seat sub initially but upgraded to a boot install as the bass just wasnt good enough.
Im no install expert but it was easy to wire it in, the amp sits inside the spare wheel and the sub fits snuggly at the side of the boot in a custom s2000 fit box. the sub eeven has the S logo on it too by coincidence.
Will upload the photos if it helps

I've got an amp powering Alpine Coaxials at the mo. Components is the other option, and being as I have a big amp already - would be a simple enough one to change to.
There's no way I'll be buying updated door cards though So it would either be make them fit, or not bother.

There's no helping some people!
Seriously, components make a huge difference to sound quality - you can always cut up your doorcards, or even better, fit the tweeters into the A-pillars.
You'll get a much better overall improvement in sound quality.

I wasn't discounting the components idea - just that I wouldn't replace the door cards - I'd do exactly as you say, cut into existing door cards or mount them in the a-pillar - something nice so they look OEM.
The £80 one would have to spend on door cards would bay for 2/3 of the focal components that I'd go for!

Be wary of the Focals! I've gone through 3 sets on the BMW as the kevlar cone brakes up and falls in the voicecoil giving a horrible scratch sound...
When they were working though they were good if a little too bright for my liking. Won't be getting them again, on the lookout for some components myself for the S as ill be starting my install soon...

Seriously don't waste your time with a cheap crap sub, spend the money where it needs spending - deaden the doors and put better speakers in

Madfish - thanks for the heads up on the focals. I loved the sound when I headt them a while ago (I was looking at Infinitys and the focals blew them away) - but hadn't looked into longevity.
UF - valid point. Although I could never deaden the doors!
