I would use some better oil as you say, that's a fooking lot of expansion. Suggests it's not behaving very well at high temps. If its viscosity is way off then it can sneak past the seals easier. If it's vaporising excessively then that's not good either.

Hopefully going to find time to change it in the next couple of weeks. When I was filling to the top level when cold it used to smoke a lot on startup to the point where I almost took the car back (only had it a couple of months). Now I keep it half full when cold and the exhausts are clear even on the first start of the day.

mien too uses around 1ltr every 3-4 weeks (1000 Miles). Also using the 5-40w Helix Ultra oil as recommended by Honda.. glad im not the only one using this much!

To be honest im considering switching back to the 10-30w stuff as per the manual. No idea why Honda changed the oil spec (they were the ones who last did my oil change - hence why i've stuck with their recommendation), but they obviously chose 10-30w for our models in the first place over 5-40 for a good reason - i see no real reason to mess with it!

I've just done my TCT (which btw is a piece of piss - even for a total rookie like me!) so im hoping this will help as it looked like i was leaking a bit through that - still early days though.

just out of interest - why does no-one recommend oil filters such as K&N? If they can improve upon the OEM Air Filter, surely their technology can be applied to the oil filter too? Or am i a sucker for marketing?!

RE the K&N, it's prob because there isn't much issue with the OEM filter.

Don't see many failed engines do you hear of from contamination / particulates in the oil.

Just being picky but you can't quantify filtering well without oil analysis. I will bugger off now
That's true, but I can get some indication by looking at the dipstick.

And if you think a Honda Filter is going to offer better, then that is the funniest thing I have heard in a long time!

I know for a fact that the company who makes Toyotas oil filters, use the same process/machine for some diesel engined pump filters.

Always remember this about Honda - If an NSX ALuminium gear knob costs

Hyper - I have no issue with the filtration of the OEM versus non OEM, its the fitment and the fact that several non OEM ones have popped off and destroyed people engines.

PS - if your eyes can see down to micron level then i'd like some of those!

Who sells 10W-30 synthetic oil? I've been looking but can't find any.

Most of the people giving their opinion have never tried anything other than OEM, and have most definately not serviced their own car! This type of paranoia is like the global warming stuff (ooh, perhaps I shouldn't because the big boys told me not to and they have.....GRAPHS!)

Again, obviously can't see micron level - would be nice though

Fitment is absolutely fine. If I had even the slightest doubt, I wouldn't use it. I've also never lost an oil/fuel filter yet. Blueprint/fram do good quality kit and they have never put a foot wrong IME. If you ask me, perhaps the filter wasn't to blame for popping off, more like the person who fitted it? Probably like the YTS kid who serviced my mates brand new LR Disco a few years back and fooked everything up

But we have had this discussion before - people blaming non OEM for failures, but yet when a Super expensive part brakes thats somehow ok!

Ignorance is bliss, but burning money, especially in these times, is a sin.
