Default A Very annoying noise.........

Hi all,

I hope its ok to post here as Ive already posted this in the 'S2000 under the hood' section before realising there was a UK section.....

Am getting an annoying rattle when accelerating at low revs just after my 54K service, Honda in Croydon have stripped out the underside but cant find anyhting - am hoping someone with an ear for noises can help shed some light

Would appreciate anyone having a look/listen and offer any advice.

Thanks

Sounds like it could be a heatshield or maybe the cat internals are failing?

Not to worry you but it does sound just like my friends 323 sport before it died, bottom end bearings gone.....we did think it was heatshield at first but i'm assuming they have checked those.

my car is making a similar sort of rattle, pretty sure it must be a heat sheild though, mine does it between about 2 and 4k at certain engine "pitches" so i guess its causing some resonance/vibration when the right pitch is struck.

Is this similar to yours?

It's definitely only at lower revs and generally when accelerating, tho as my video shows it happens as well after revving when stationary, though not always?!?!? A few people have mentioned heat shields. Am not a mechanical person at all so know nothing about heat shields - can someone enlighten me!

Thanks again for the input

sounds a bit big endy(worn big end bearings) but videos are notoriously difficult to accuratley diagnose a noise from.

Found out what it is...... Catalytic converter has broken up inside, 5 mins at my local garage (non Honda) and problem solved!!

I've read a couple of threads which talk about this being covered under warranty due to age of car - 03 Plate and 60K miles, anyone have any more knowledge on this?

The garage quoted me approx £300 for the cat + labour, does this sound right or....? should I get one myself and get it fitted??

Get a second hand cat from the likes of GarageR, a trader on here, or have a shifty on Fleabay

Glad it's not serious.

Well at least you know it's not a terminal engine noise and pretty easy to rectify.

Thanks guys - done a bit of goggling! and found some cat's from 20 - 30K engines for around the £135 mark second hand so might not be too bad!!

Interestingly called my local Honda to get a quote, just out of interest and the service guys said they'd never heard of a Cat 'breaking up' on a S2K before??!?, have seen a couple of other threads on here with exactly the same problem......now I know what to search for.

£135 sounds a bit pricey to me goose, I'm sure I picked one up once for less than £100. Still much cheaper than the dealer.

I also think there is a non Honda alternative, but the name escapes me - try doing a search for "replacement CAT"
