There's got to be a trade off, the car is designed for cruising rather than track use. If you want to change the nature of the car you have to pay somewhere else.

you lose nothing at the top end given that the top end for the engine is some 30mph slower than that of the gearbox. What you say about motorway speeds is quite true and I imagine with 4.56 final drive it could come very tiresome and expensive being not far from VTEC at 70mph but 4.44 is a trade off.

I get what you're saying about 'low down' power I suppose it depends on if you're talking about low down the rev range or low down in the speed range. I'm perhaps not thinking of it in the same way but you do get to 60/100 quicker which is what I thought the aim was for the OP, I am probably wrong.

As for being difficult to keep on the boil I can't disagree enough about that, you can keep it in cam with no trouble at all you just have to shift more and it's not that noticeable.

For lower down power I agree the best solution is a supercharger, unfortunately some of us don't have one available, yet .

Anyone got any better ideas as to how to unleash some low range grunt?

Matt.
Sell your car and get a old V8 TVR.

Seriously now, nitrous would be a real benefit here if you were to keep the car.

Ahh
With all the RSX gubbins

If I wanted low down grunt, for the same cash .. I'd be after a TVR chim.

Unfortunalty it's the nature of a small capacity 4pot.

Loads of useful stuff.
I'll admit I'm not talking from experience.

If I was doing a Phil and going nutty, I'd think about lengthing the final drive (first 200mph S2k?).

With the SC I had the power coming in as low as 5k .. which made it very easy to keep on the go. I could only *imagine* that shorter gearing would make it harder (I've heard of some VVTi / VTEC engines dropping out the power band on a normal shift).

But then centrifugal SC's are not what you want for low end power.

Rightyho then everyone,

Guess the answer is the old V8 TVR then. Its not really a complaint I have, so much as a wonderment if obtaining some oomph was possible. Not really interested in changing final drives etc, and as for supercharging, thats not really my bag either.
The point of the thread was to discover if there was an easy way to make the car a little more 'drivable.'
It was also half inspired by the recent 'I got my ass whooped by a 1.2 Nova' discussions. From what I understand from reading those topics was that it was a fundamental lack of low down get up and go which was the affliction, rather than a lack of brute horsepower.

Thanks for all the replies, you really are a jolly helpful lot, aren't you!!

Matt.

If you want loads of power from the off, launch the car in the vtec rev band.

It's quite nice, up to about 8k and side step the clutch. None of this waiting for the revs to climb, you are already there and leaving a nice number 11 behind the car

From an NA engine about 80lbft per liter is the max torque you can get.

With only 2 liters, there just isn't the displacement.

To get the bhp, you need to make that torque @ higher revs, and the more you rev the engine, the more you have a big gap before the powerband.
