Default VTEC Engagement

On my way to work today, I experienced a lack of accelaration at the point where the vtec should engage. I was in 3rd gear and at 5900/6000rpm. My oil level is ok as I checked it earlier, any ideas?

Mike

David is correct, the oil level influences VTEC engagement.
Check the oil after the car has been standing some time.

It could also be a map sensor problem. If your oil level is fine, and the problem persists, then pop to your dealer and let them diagnose it.

Also..was the engine warmed up? The car wont let you VTEC until the engine is warmed up, usually indicated by 3 bars illuminated on the temperature gauge. This still catches me out occassionally in the mornings. The rev limiter just kills the revs dead at 6k which is about the onset of VTEC. When your in 2nd gear and accelerating hard expecting 3K more revs it's like hitting a brick wall when you're not expecting it!

"hitting the brick wall" - Perfect analogy!!

It does tend to frighten passengers though. Clever thinking by Honda.

Do any other cars have cut-outs..or limitations as they get warm??

Quite a few modern cars do this too, the latest Toyota Celica/MR2 will not let you rev past a certain point until properly warm. A very good idea

The E46 M3 and the M5 have something even better. A variable rev limit, with lights round the rev counter showing you where the limit currently is as the engine warms up. Very nice.
