Default VTEC Failure

Just a link about the failure of the VTEC system in my S again - second one this year.

Will keep you updated and I'll let you know how the dealership performs. Their Service Department responded extremely well last time so I am confident they'll deal with the problem in a professional manner.

If I knew I'd stop doing it

Taking the S in on Tuesday for the dealer to have a preliminary look.

Do you know if the ECM is switching to VTEC. You should see a voltage at the VTEC solenoid. If it's not attempting to switch, then it is most likely a temp sensor problem.

If it is switching, then I would have thought that it is most likely to be oil related. Could there be a blockage in the oil gallery? Are you using the correct weight of oil? Maybe a change of oil could cure it?

Sorry S2000RJ but I am a complete duffer when it comes to car electronics.

Regarding oil, I always use Mobil 1 and have the car regularly serviced so there shouldn't really be a problem there.

But thanks for the suggestions.

Sorry, I was just thinking that if changing the head temporarily solved the problem, then it must have been something that the dealer did when changing the head that cured it. The things that come to mind are disconnecting / reconnecting the electrics and changing the oil.

The dealer should be able to check very easily if the VTEC solenoid is being activated. If it is and the ECM is functioning normally, I would expect it to be oil pressure related, unless it is a physical problem with the head or block. A pressure test should be enough to check that.

I would be worried if all they did was change the head, as it does not seem to be a permenant fix. I would be surprised if you have had two heads fail. Maybe your plugs are falling out, but again you would have to be very unlucky. I have the same trouble with my gearbox. I'm now on the 3rd replacement clutch and gearbox. The latest combination still exhibits the same symptons as the previous two. Unfortunately, Honda (UK) don't appear to consider that the fault is elsewhere in the clutch mechanism / drive train.

Following my first visit I am happy that they know what they are doing and are providing the right level of customer service.

It wasn't an oil pressure problem last time but of course that doesn't mean that it isn't an oil pressure problem this time - if you see what I mean.

I would hope that if it was anything obvious they would have asked me to check (I would hope).

Well yesterday, my wife took our S2000 into Ashford Honda for them to look at the problem.

After checking the engine using their diagnostics equipment and taking it for a run they couldn't find any problems - they suspected that something they did while trying to diagnose/reproduce the problem fixed it

Anyway, I took it for a run last night and guess what........no difference. Still no VTEC. Well that's not quite true. In first gear, foot flat on the floor, I could feel a very, very, very slight change in performance as I went through 6K. But in 2nd and 3rd the power curve was totally flat.

I spoke to the Service Manager today who told me what they had found yesterday. He even said they could hear the VTEC cut in while they had it in the garage.

Anyway, they are happy for me to take it back in and they'll get a representative from Honda there to discuss the problem with me.

It's strange I feel very calm about this when really I should be spitting blood But so far Honda Ashford have provided an exemplary service.
