As far as I know you can't VTEC when cold, it doesn't allow it, needs water temp amongst other things to meet certain criteria before allowing it to engage

Not sure the previous owner ever hit VTEC. He thanked me for not redlining the car on the test drive! When I sold my AP1 I had to beg people to hit VTEC so they could see why they wanted the car...
