The symptoms in my old MY00 were a feeling like the car was dropping in and out of VTEC when the engine revs were in the VTEC zone.
Now that is a good shout - looking at the various threads seems like the same ball park of issues so will give this one a try and report back.

Not managed to get the S in to a garage to check the solenoid (think checking that is a bit beyond my capabilities) - cleaned the MAP and the air filter, last time I took it out no problems what so ever, was only a short blast in the early morning before work - no blistering hot motorways for hours. So can't really tell if the clean sorted anything out...

It's very simple to remove the VTEC solenoid, It's literally 3 10mm bolts and one connector

Oh yeah, removing it won't be the problem. It'll be replacing the gasket and putting everything back in place it where I'll cock it up

Seriously, Jon, give it a shot yourself - it took me 10 minutes to do on the driveway with no experience while trying to manage a squabbling 5 and 7 year old!

If you're super paranoid, get the parts and get a local S2K owner to give you a hand. I'm Nottingham way which is probably a bit of a trek for you but I'm sure there'll be someone closer.

The gasket is a perfect fit into it's groove, there's piratically no chance of cock ups...
Here's what it looks like:-

Just remember the seal does the sealing not He-man strength doing the bolts back up again - M6 to ally head doesn't need a lot of torque. I've never had serious issues with my engine but took my solenoid off to check for the fun of it and there was various debris in there so it's definitely worth checking for your symptoms

Had some rare spare time this morning so took the Solenoid off just to check the seals - everything's fine & no debris in the mesh which was surprising! MAPs clean, intake's clean, Solenoid gaskets & connectors are fine so I'm at a loss to what's caused this Gonna see if I can repeat what caused the issues in the first place and see if it wasn't just a one off...

Thanks for your help guys!
