I think this has been covered recently, it is due to the disks cooling and shrinking in the process.

I was taught to leave the car in gear when parked just in case of handbreak failure.

Sorry to hear that, t1mbo. Is the car OK ? Did it hit anything ?

Seems like this is a common problem with the S - has anyone had similar experiences with other cars ?

I'm afraid if I left the car in gear I wouldn't check to see if it's in neutral the next time I fired the engine up - sod's law it'd be when the nose is parked close to a wall.

I leave a screen cloth over the gear stick to remind me it's in gear.

I'd probably forget that too, or if I did manage to put a post-it or something on the gearstick the only difference would be I'd be thinking "what's going on here?..." as I bump start the car into the wall...

Bad luck BigTed, I know how u feel, once a girlfriend's father moved my Polo G40 and put it bad in it's place, but left it in gear and did not tell me. That went flyin into their wall, nasty mess. Dan I'll let you know after I've been to Balmer Lawn. It was unfortunate I did not see that thread.

Take care all
Tim

Or leave it in reverse & park backwards

If the car has been on a good run (i.e. the disks are hot) then leave to cool then apply handbrake (e.g. go and have dinner etc. then come back to put it in neutral and apply handbrake).

There's another very good reason not to leave the handbrake on or keeping brakes on at junctions/traffic etc. - brakes get hot and need to cool down, the part where the pads contact stop cooling that part of the brake and this leads to WARPED DISKS. More an issue for trackdays or when on spirited runs but worth considering nonetheless.
