In theory weight over the rear means more oversteer, but I would think the benefit of having more rear traction in snow would outweigh that, especially as your prime concern is getting up hills, not ultimate cornering speed.
I tried it last winter, weighted the boot with about 100 kgs. Tracton was great, but compromised handling to the extent where I'd rather not move than move in the wrong direction. The extra weight meant once it started to go, there was no recovery.
I carry about 40-50kgs of tools etc for work in my boot and over the last week since the bad weather has set in here I can notice the benefits. There is no doubt that to much throttle will cause you to lose traction no matter how much weight you have in the boot. But adding some weight allows you to creep that bit further up the rev range before traction is lost. I normally pull gears around the 2000rpm and try to be as smooth as possible with the clutch and use the brakes as little as possible.
