Default What engine's in your S2000?

My manual lists 2 variants:

F20C-1
F20C-2

No details, except that it states the F20C-1 can use 95 Octane. The F20C-2 is 98 Octane only. It says 'you may use lower octane briefly if knocking does not occur.'

I've a F20C-2....

What's everyone got?

95 and 98?!?! That's insane. The highest I've ever gotten was 93.5. Isn't that the octane for jet fuel or something?

Nope. Octane is quoted differently in the UK. I can't remember the exact difference, but I think your 92 is our 98 or something like that.

UK quotes octane the same as Japan if that's any help.

Oh!..<smacks head>

That makes much more sense. Just don't pay any attention to me.

Mine's an F20C2 which is a bit worrying as that appears to mean it will only run on super. The dealer definitely said it would go on regular and I've been meaning to try it to see what happens before I find myself in a situation where I have to put regular. I though I could just try with a quarter tank just in case it all goes a bit pear shaped - at least that way I can dilute it with 3/4 super.

Does anyone put regular in their car and if so how does it drive? More importantly, is your engine an F20C1 or F20C2?

Mine's an F20C2. You have to check the first few digits of your engine No. to see which type you've got. Mine should run on 98! There's no avoiding it, there's a label inside the the filler flap with 98 on every time I open it. I could get 98 till a few months ago at a local Texaco garage, but he stopped stocking it. Since then I get Shell 97. I haven't noticed a scrap of difference. I really wouldn't sweat it. My manual goes on to say that if I can't obtain the proper grade I can use a lower grade as long as I dont get any engine 'knocking'.
The only time I've put 95 in was when it was all I could get in the tanker strike a while back but by ducking and diving I usually managed to keep the tank half 98 half 95. The test car I drove at Brindley Honda prior to purchase was being run on 95 (typical)
and the only thing I noticed was it wasn't happy ticking over at lights etc. Someone on this board has recently posted that Shell are about to start selling 98 any time about now but I don't think it's been confirmed yet. I'm going to make some enquiries at my petrol station I think.

F20C2 is the European and Japanese market variant
F20C1 is for North America

The differences are fuel, emissions, ECU although the engine itself appears to be mechanically the same. Manual quotes same compression ratios!

You can use 95 octane in yours, but the ECU will retard the timing to prevent knocking. This means less power It takes time for it to recover when you go back to 98 octane. III've heard 100 miles, but not sure if it's that precise. I don't myself because mine seems hesitant in the wet with 95.
