Default Whining coming from the off-side front wheel arch.

A speed related reasonably high pitched whining is coming from the off-side front wheel arch. Even when the LSB isn't in the car. It doesn't seem to be affected by how I'm steering. There doesn't seem to be any extra heat in there. Any ideas? I'm taking it to the dealers on Tuesday, but it would be nice to have a vague idea as to what it might be.

I'm guessing the wheel bearing.

Its not power steering related is it?

Check the fluid?

Does it rise and fall with speed?

Sounds odd. Wheel bearings normally make a droning sound that gets worse when the bearing is put under load. Even if it didn't get louder under load the noise should get louder when turning because the wheel is rotating faster than the other.

If you did have a bearing starting to fail, the increased loads from your new tyres would have made it worse.

The only variable seems to be road speed.

Did this come about when you warped your discs again? Pad dragging? Wheel no hotter than the other side?Is there plenty of pad left?

I first noticed it on Friday. 2 days after warping the disks.

Well I'm changing disks again today so I'll check. But the disk on that side doesn't seem to get any hotter.

If the pads are dragging or stuck on, the wheel on that side will be hotter than the same wheel on the other side of the car.

PS, reminder- don't clean your discs with WD40

When you've got the pads out, check to see if you can feel any play in the hub by wiggling up and down. There shouldn't be any you can feel.

To be honest, unless its transmitted noise from something else in the car, it can only really be brake or wheel bearing related.

Is changing a wheel bearing a big or expensive job? I suspect Honda might baulk. They may not, just want to be prepared.

Changing a wheel bearing is not a difficult job, particularly when its not a driven wheel. They will need a press to push the races out, but otherwise its very straight forward. Unless of course Honda have designed a wheel bearing that is totally different from every other car i've worked on.
