Thanks all.

I'm a bit constrained as I'm in work (and away from home at the mo).

Have just been down to Asda. The carpet is now under industrial quantities of anti bacterial cleaner and bicarbonate of soda (I read on the web that this helps "lift" the smell).

Will be trying to keep it from drying / getting warm until I can get back home this evening.

This happend to a friend of mine - so she took the milk carton and the car back to Tesco and they paid for a full valet to be carried out - got rid of the smell instantly and no cost to her!

Another vote for using a VAX.

I guess that a carpet from a breaker won't be too expensive - your challenge might be removing blood stains though.

This happened in the boot of my beater. A vax of the area cleaned it but the smell remained. This is gonna sound really weird but I was told charcoal would do it.

I bought a bag of charcoal, cut it open and left it in the boot for a week.

The smell is gone.

Don't ask me why...but it worked for me.

Oh, if you do try this, don't get the charcoal soaked in lighter fluid.

Charcoal is used in filters as well.

Milk is nothing compared to meat's blood smell! The only solution was to use detergent "BOLD 2 in 1" (Apple's freshness). It did the job in the end!

I doesn't mater how much you sterilise the milk as long as it is present it will probably always act as a growth medium for the bacteria. Get it cleaned up first and then sterilise, you could try milton.

Charcoal is not a bad idea for lingering odours.

Don't even bother DIY:

The smell WILL return, unless you seek specialist help:

I can seriously recommend Clean Image (or equivalent)

http://www.clean-image.co.uk/fire-flood.htm

They put an odour-kill bomb in your car!
