Behind the 'B' pillars (that's the upright door pillar to the rear of the front doors) you don't even need windows so anything goes.
Selling, driving or fitting tints outside this restriction opens you to prosecution.
Many forces have lightmeters to check these days too.
Just to add that most modern car windows that have no film applied DO NOT transmit 100% light either. Its about 86%. Add to that that most new cars have a slight tint anyway and you are already close to the legal limit of 70%VLT. Since the new laws introduced in 2004, a lot of shops wont touch front windows.
If you have seriously dark front windows and get pulled, you may end up walking home.

pointless having the roof down and windows up and even if you have no tints it looks ghay with the windows up anyways*!
*apart from on the motorway as it get's very windy after a while

I reckon they will bring this into the MOT soon, VLT test. Just like they check on number plate lettering size and space.
