What's the max % to remain legal?
On side glass forward of the 'B' pillars you must have a minimum of 70% visible light transmission (70% VLT).

Behind the 'B' pillars (that's the upright door pillar to the rear of the front doors) you don't even need windows so anything goes.

Selling, driving or fitting tints outside this restriction opens you to prosecution.
Many forces have lightmeters to check these days too.

Just to add that most modern car windows that have no film applied DO NOT transmit 100% light either. Its about 86%. Add to that that most new cars have a slight tint anyway and you are already close to the legal limit of 70%VLT. Since the new laws introduced in 2004, a lot of shops wont touch front windows.

If you have seriously dark front windows and get pulled, you may end up walking home.

I reckon they will bring this into the MOT soon, VLT test. Just like they check on number plate lettering size and space.

USA traffic cops have a hand held tool as standard equipment for it now, so we wont be far behind.
