Thumbs up Windscreen washers!

OK so my car is going in for it's MOT in the morning, and my passenger side windscreen washer isn't working very well.

So firstly if no water comes out, or it doesn't reach the screen is it an MOT failure?

Secondly I've taken it all to bits to figure out why the water comes out one side but not the other. Under the nozzle is a right angled piece, and directly upstream of that on both sides is some sort of one way valve piece with a little ball bearing in it. On the passenger side I can see the ball bearing and it gets stuck at one end and I think this stops the water coming out (I pushed it back in and the flow resumed, briefly). If I take the valve thingy out I get plenty of flow! The driver's side one seems to be partially clogged up with gunk so the ball bearing never reaches the end, seems to work fine.

So what's going on? Do I need a new valve at the passenger side, or is it the driver side one causing a lack of pressure/flow that is the issue and just needs the gunk removing?

i'd try a de-gunk first.

it might be worth draining your washer bottle aswell, as if it's in the tubing, its very likely it's in the bottle too!

most common cause to this is too much washer fluid in it (wrong concentration).

Cool thanks for the quick answer, it's odd though looks like rubber solution like you'd use to fix a bicycle puncture that;s in the driver's side one...

The water mixture has gone off and is getting gluey? It needs washed out and replaced with fresh. Also the one way valve may also be gummed up, a wash in some vinegar should help.

When I cleaned mine out I found hard gunk behind the washer jets as well as in in the one way valves.
You can remove them from the bonnet easily by pushing them through from underneath.
Needed a pin and lots of water under the tap to clear the gunge out of mine.
When I put it all back together the water shot over the roof

I used some old Porsche stuff in mine which reacted with the Honda stuff and it was this that gummed it all up.

Is it me or are the washer gets on the S2000's GARBAGE! Did they change them on the MY04> ??

My mate changed his EP3 Type R ones for Honda Jazz ones and they properly spray the screen not just squirt at 4 bits of the screen.

That's quite a popular upgrade with VTEC ricers.

All cars tend to get gunk (bacteria mostly) in the washer tubes, especially if some loon's been putting Puffy Liquid into the reservoir instead of the correct stuff.

Best thing you can do is strip the lot out and to clean and rinse in lots of very hot water.

You'll need to flush the reservoir with hot water too.

The bunging up then ceases.

i only use water in my bottle.
no trouble with gunk up.

i've had it on previous cars - i disconnected the washer hose from the bottom of the jet nozzle, and emptied the bottle using the washer motor full topup with pure clean water, and a final blast of the motor to run fresh water through the hoses.

if you have it - compressed air works wonders for clearing out the jets, or stuborn components.
