Default Winter Tyres

I know I'm gonna get a lot of grief for this thread as has been discussed a thousand times before - but as far as I can see no-one ever answers the question.

I'm going to need new rear tyres soon (I'm on the RE050). The big question is - with winter fast approaching should I go for winter tryes?

the main draw backs I see are
1) the fact that I'd have to change all 4 tyres (my fronts have plenty left on)
2) I'm worried about handling changes
3) I would probably want them changing back to RE050 for spring (loosing tyres likley to have plenty of thread on them).

My S is a daily driver which is why I want winter tyres but just not sure it is worth it.

The ideal solution would be to have a set of each and change with the seasons - but no-where to store them (my S takes up all the room in my garage) and I guess I risk damaging wheels with regulalr tyre changes.

Opinions ........?

Where in the country do you live?

I've used my old MY00 on S02's for 3 winters and my current MY06 on RE050's for one winter with no tyre issues at all. With the exception of when it snowed.

If you live in scotland and expected lots of very cold weather or regular snow, i'd say yes. Otherwise don't bother.

I live in leeds and I've been fine in all weathers for the last 2.5 years/43000 miles on RE050's. Just make sure there's plenty of tread on them and avoid going out in the snow if you've not driven a RWD car in the snow before. Considering we're supposed to be having a mild winter, I really can't see the point in winter tyres.

Very popular in Germany. The amount of cars driving around with black hubs on. Makes them look like Robocops car.

The RE050 tyres are fine for winter use. My car is a daily driver and I've done better in it than many other cars with TC and the other electronic wizardry.

I have a set I bought for my MY02, but have never tried them on my MY05.

This is partly due to the fact that we have not had any hard winters since I changed my S, but mainly because the RE050s are much better on snow than the SO2s.

Winter tyres are great fun due to the enormous grip levels they have.............

but not really worth the money unless you are guaranteed weeks of lying snow.

Popular but not compulsory. And if they don't need them over here in Northern Germany, then I think the S will survive in Leeds for the winter.

Just be careful, it's easy to get caught out.
