I forget whether it would be better to run them in parallel or in series - fester?
Depends on the impedance of the speakers & output amp.

series = 4 + 4 = 8
paralel = 1/4 + 1/4 = 2...

Can you look at the actual speakers (if not measure the resistance across one of the connectors)- that will be the giveaway. Referring to jml's post most car head units are happiest running at 4ohms - so if the speakers are 2ohm run them in series to make the head unit see 4ohm and if they are 8 ohm run them in parallel.

TBH this is what I expected from roll hoop speakers so it's good to know they are out there - I've always been surprised at the mono channel firing into the back of your head it just doesn't make sense.

Going by the service manual, the rear speakers are wired in parallel, with each hoop having a right and left channel.

That would make more sense to me, otherwise the left and right balance adjustment would be all over the place, rear would be different to the front.

So, just to confirm....

I take the stereo's rear left channel (+ve), and split in to 2. I connect one to each od the left speakers (+ve) in each hoop.

I do the same for the -ve wire, connecting it to the left speakers (-ve) in each hoop.

I then repeat the same process for the rear right channel from the stereo.

Is this configuration 'in parallel' or 'in series' ?

I have an aftermarket DAB headunit powering the 2 front (uprated aftermarket) speakers. Will I need anything else ?

Not looking for amp /sub yet, just acceptable sound.

Thanks
Bharat

That is in parallel and should work ok.

Acceptable sound requires decent component door speakers. Having the tweeter by your feet is really bad.

Roll hoops are a band aid IMHO.

Whilst on the topic... are these any good? Better or worse than the 2006+ roll bar cover integrated speakers?

I have a 2005, from what I've read the 2004+ cars come pre-wired to take these.

See Ebay Item

I have these and they help when driving at speed with the roof down as you don't have to have the stereo up too loud. Sound is good too.

Those roll hoop speakers are such low power I doubt it would matter which way you wired them up but iif you want to be sure, you need to know the Ohm impedance rating per speaker - how you wire them up really does matter as it changes the impedance seen by the amplifier in the stereo.

http://www.bcae1.com/spkrmlti.htm explains it very nicely.

You'd also need to know what Ohm impedance the amplifier can handle.

For my money if you want better sound ...

1. Quality install - sound deadening everything to keep road noise out and sound volume in using OEM stuff.
2. Better speakers and seperate tweeters - install later door cards with the built in tweeter positions if you can.
3. Better headunit and source - remember that quite a lot of your MP3 collection is junk in terms of source quality and unless you ripped it from a decent quality original at a decent bit rate, you have no guarantee of this.
4. 2 channel amp with at least 75W RMS and speakers that can handle at least 100W RMS
5. 4 channel amp with at least 4x100RMS and a sub. Amp runs 2x100RMS for the components and 1x200RMS for the sub.

Good to know. Any idea how I check if the wiring is there as it should be? Where do I check?
