here is an idea but might be too much hassle or not workable
phone one of the breakers listed here and see how much they woud offer for the car. their interest will mainly be the engine which worth probably 2000-2500k today
then work out how much you need from the insurer toget to 13.5k and offer them the difference but tell them you want to keep it.

The only thing is that after the excess of 250 is taken of and the fact i've been without a car and paying insurance for getting on 2 months and i feel a bit hard done by.
their valuation seems pretty fair, they do have software which plugs into autotrade etc to get guide prices, they will always start low
your excess is your excess, you agreed to it
without a car for 2 months is a nightmare but i guess you didn't have cover for this?
bad news mate

Don't bet on it - I had GAP insurance (purchased through the dealer when I bought the car) and it caused an unbelieveable amount of stress.
They said the insurers had underestimated the value of the car, so they wouldn't pay the full difference between insurance payout and original purchase price. It took months to sort out, wiht the insurance company threatening to take the hire car off me (not their fault the GAP insurers were ####wits), and the GAP insurers not answering letters/faxes/losing paperwork/telling me they used a different version of Glasses guide to the insurers etc.
Be ready for a battle!

GAP insurance is actually a bit of a con when you look at the small print - kind of like payment protection. You have to meet a million conditions before you actually get anywhere near seeing money...I'm not advising against it, just make sure you know what you're buying. Don't forget that the dealer is legally obliged (under conditions laid out by the FSA) to mention it to you and ensure you understand the consequences of not taking it. Because of this it can end up being a bit of a sales guilt trip...
