Xcar Link Problems
After spending all day yesterday fitting my new Xcar link, buying a new Nano, pondering mounting options and getting my head around iTunes, I have finally plugged my IPod in and ...... it dosen't work properly. On plugging the Xcar lead into my Nano it displays a screen saying "unsupported device will not charge" and although I can hear music through the car stereo, the dash and radio controls will not control the IPod. I have pulled it all out again, checked all the connections, turned it all off and it's still not working properly. I have done a search on the forums and I found a couple of similar threads but none really came to a conclusion. I suspect it's a dodgy Xcar unit unless any one has any other suggestions. I'm going to take it to work tommorrow and see if anyones elses IPod works with it, I'm wondering if maybe because it's a brand new model it's unsupported.
Any suggestions?
I had a couple of problems, mainly with the loose connection into the "black box" which caused the unit just to stop working. The chap I brought it from on e-bay was great, sent me replacement units by return. The 3rd one still works fine after 9 months with a 1st gen Nano.
I seem to recall having differing symptoms for each failure, one time it was that you couldn't control the ipod from the dash controls, another that no sound came out. Don't remember any messages, but I have a gen 1 Nano, so may be less sophisticated.
Just an update for you all. It turns out that the new 4th Gen Nano (and I think all other brand new IPods) are incompatible with pretty much every accessory realeased so far. Apparently Apple have decided to rewire the connectors, meaning that they will not charge or in fact operate at all. I tried a 3rd Gen Nano on my Xcar link and it worked perfectly, meaning the problem lays with my new 4th Gen Nano.
I emailed Xcar UK explaing the issues I was having and received this answer -
Hi John,
Thanks for your message and sorry to hear that your having problems.
We have recently noted a compatibility issue between Xcarlink and the new 4th Generation ipod. We are now in the process of making an updated version which will fully support all features including charging. The new version is likely to be in stock in the next few weeks. Please let me know if you could like to return the interface and then we can place the new model on Backorder for you.
Kind Regards
Jan
I'm impressed, quickly answered with the offer of an exchange, brilliant! So just beware if you are planning on buying a new IPod.

I've just bought a brand new nano and it works perfectly. Have you updated the IPODS firmware through Itunes. Mine needed an update when I first got it, I never plugged it into the car before updating it so cannot say if it didn't work beforehand.
Mine can be controlled from the stereo, but it will not charge, this is covered in the instructions though, that if the IPOD is plugged into a USB or device that doesn't have a high voltage output, then it will not charge from the device.
