Interesting comments! I'm surprised you think the Z4M feels heavy. It's not a particularly heavy car - it's under 1500kg and to me feels significantly lighter than a 350Z for instance.

Agree with your comments about the 'pointyness' of the S compared with the other two. I really miss the instant scalpel sharp turn in of the S, and its lack of understeer. What's the M like in terms of Understeer? My Z4 3.0 is crap when trying to get the back end out in a corner, all it does is understeer. I would hope the M would be better with the M diff?
I hear what you're saying, but at 1485kg, the Z4M Roadster IS quite a heavy car for it's relatively small size. And that's still a hefty 214kg (33.6 stones!) over the 1271kg of the S2000.

I tried a 350Z back in late 04 and found it a bit brash and bling for my tastes. Yes; and a bit on the wieldy side: nice sound and good gearchange though! I'm ashamed to say it, but badge snobbery won the day at that time and I bought a 3.2TT instead. And then - I must admit - a few months later did NOT get on with the DSG and wished I'd gone for the 350Z... not least because of the 350Z's stormingly good residuals at that time (upon which badge snobbery ironically had no effect whatsoever!).

You would NOT have ANY problem getting the back end of a Z4M out round corners!! I'm no expert/hero, but to me the M diff does exactly what it says on the tin!

Cheers,

Mike

Another opinion on the Z4M

The Z4M is a great car and the extra weight isn't an issue, it handles just as good as an S2000. The extra power makes it feel like it

On topic:

BMW to move Z4 line to Germany

April Wortham - Automotive News
September 3, 2007 - 12:01 am EST

BMW AG plans to move production of the Z4 coupe and roadster from its Spartanburg, S.C., plant to Regensburg, Germany, starting with the next generation. The move, which will occur in 2009 or 2010, is aimed at centralizing development and production expertise of vehicle types, Bunny Richardson of BMW Manufacturing Corp. said Friday.

Regensburg builds the 1 series and all variants of the 3 series, including convertibles. Besides being the birthplace of the Z4, which replaced the Z3 in 2002, Spartanburg produces the X5 crossover.

BMW plans to build a new crossover, the X6, in Spartanburg in 2008. Production of the smaller X3 crossover will move to Spartanburg from contract assembler Magna Steyr's plant in Graz, Austria, with the next generation, likely in 2010.

Probably due about the same time as the next S2000 then. Should be interesting!

BMW resale prices are currently badly affected by the oversupply & the disappearance of 'third-market' (aka council-house bimmers) demand because of the high service costs.

I believe Mr Gaddafi predicted this a couple of years back.

The Z4M is the pricey top-end of the range, so it would appear to take a big hit, especially as the Z4 hasn't had the expected appeal.

I'm still loving it at the mo thanks!

Had the modified CDV fitted and I've changed the gearknob for a countersunk stainless steel one and in combination they've really sorted out the 1st to 2nd gearchange - I actually feel like I'm in control of the car now!!!

It's much closer in feel to the S2000's 'change now but I'm still not sure I'll ever drive a car with a better 'box than the Honda's.

I really do need to update my original thread with a running report - I promise I'll get round to it soon!
