Is running different tires in Front and Rear okay?

Definitely do not get the performance winter tires, they are awful.

I don't know about on an S, but on my A4 (granted AWD, ESP, etc) performance winters (Dunlop Wintersport M2s) offered a ton of traction. I do agree with the "downsizing" comments though.
I put them on the S550 last winter, granted 382hp & RWD didn't help much. It was so bad that I got the Q7.

I think an Audi (with Quattro ) would do well on R comps in the snow

Kamron, on a car like that I'm sure they were ok, but full snows would have blown you away. Put it this way - I put Blizzak WS50's on the IS350(rwd) and didn't even need to use the snow setting. You could get on it from a stop and it wouldn't even try to spin. Its great. I had Dunlp M3's(perf winter) on the IS300 when I had it and I got stuck 3-4 times in parking lots, and almost slid into a few people. Not fun.

i agree with downsizing tires. also agree 100x that performance winter tires on the S are not such a great idea.

EDIT: after thinking about this - i ran my first winter on my AP1 with blizzaks on the rears and all seasons on the front - no problems, but i drive very conservatively. anything is possible, just try to match the tires as best as possible
