Angry What's that rattle at speed?

bookin' down 90e yesterday. funny rattle over the ton, not the same as the one I occasionally get from the passenger seat when it's been reclined too much.

Look out over the bonnet and d'oh! The hood is open and banging against the safety catch.

schnikes!

I check my oil at every fill up, so I've got the hood open every 200mi or so. And I religiously follow the "drop from 6 inches" method of hood closure.

The main latch is ok and undamaged, and the secondary is also ok.

Suggestions? Not hatin' but don't particularly care for the (rice) hood pin route...

are you saying you improperly closed the hood and just didn't get it to firmly latch?

Or

are you saying you for sure know your hood was securely latched all the way and then it broke its self loose and was caught by the second safety catch?

I'm saying I closed the hood in what I thought was a proper way, but that it came loose (maybe I bumped the hood latch release? Don't know how, but anything is possible, right?) and was caught by the second safety catch.

If nothing else, it was unsellting enough that now while I'm runing over 60 I watch the gaps between the fenders and the hood and I can see a little movement and it's wigging me out. Having my hood come up at speed is pretty high on my list of things that suck.

Maybe karma is telling me to slow down?

F*** Karma! It's gotta catch you first, right? Drive faster!

I would keep a close eye on it, but it sounds like it was probably an isolated incident. If it happens again, then I would worry. In the meantime I might spend a little time interrogating the rugrats and see if any of them were playing racecar with daddy's car.

Easy way to check if it's your latch needing a re-adjustment is to close the hood.

Then push on it ever so slightly (yet firm). Using some traction, wiggle the hood with your palms flat on the hood surface up and down, left to right. Find the play, if you hit the latch right, the hood may spring up and out of its first catch.

If it does, you should need to re-adjust your catch and/or your latch.
