Need your help fellow S2000 owners. I'm seriously thinking of moving to Utah or the surrounding area. Looking for a nice quiet town. Coming from California, I need to be around trees and water. I will have to seek employement too. I am a meat cutter and my wife is a PCB designer for an electronics company. We don't have to move but want a simpler life. I will be there in May(Driving) and need suggestions about where to look first. Any serious suggestions besides stay home? Which is your favorite town in Utah for things to do, culture, employement, low crime, real estate prices etc? Thanks in advance.
If you're looking for very small community, trees, water, etc and don't mind snow ... and want to be fairly close to Salt Lake City for employement and cultural activities ... you should check out the Big Cottonwood Canyon. It's only about 20 to 30 min from SLC and there are currently a lot of places up for sale. There was a fair bit of speculative building up there before the Olympics and now the real estate market is fairly soft for such property.
When you 're in town, you should check out Snyder Bros Meats. Family owned, but the best meat I've ever found. There are a fair number of PCB design / mfg firms in SLC, but nothing compared to the bay area.
Another option is the area up around Park City. Great night life, but real estate up there is expensive.
I usually spend 3+ days a week in northern CA. I've lived all over ... east coast, midwest, and west coast ... moved to Utah in 1990 and I will NOT be moving again.
Are you going to be driving in one of the SCCA races in May? If you're not already planning on it, you should. There are a couple of events in May. Check out http://www.utahscca.com for info.
I'm currently the only S2000 participating in any of the Utah SCCA events. I'd like to see more!
Thank you very much Msm-s2K. I won't be driving in any races. I got my car up into the higher RPMs the other day on a rare open stretch of Hiway 1 just outside of Half Moon Bay. Scared me. I didn't know this thing had afterburners. My car only has 2,500 miles on it. I granny drive it. As you can imagine, there isn't many opportunities to really drive this car. So many people and so much traffic.
Thanks for the info. I will check out the places you mentioned.

Statement and question. I am a babtised but inactive Mormon from Arizona. I haven't been to Utah for many years. Kind of a touchy question and no offense intended but here goes. Last time I was there, Utah was very Mormon. Is it still that way? I don't have a problem with that but I know that, as most religions are, Mormons are very clanish. As most religions do, Mormons prefere to hire, rent and sell to Mormons. What is the current climate like?
I consider myself to be a moderate. I want to live and let live in an equally respectful environment or community. I have lived for years in a very and increasingly liberal California. I like diversity as long as my rights are respected. California is too liberal and this is the reason I need to get out of here. I am just curious about the current attitude and climate in Utah. What should I expect? If there are still pockets and communities that are conservatively Mormon, which are they? Big Cottonwood Canyon? Park City? Tell me about Monument Valley. Are there communities that are California liberal? Which are they?
Tell me what you don't like about Utah. What areas and why? Are there huge political, religious, racial diversities?
P.S. Contratulations on the safe return of Elizibeth Smart. We are all so happy for her family and your community.
Welcome to the Utah S2K "community". I was transferred here 6 years ago from California. I was there from age 3-35. I am a non-mormon Christian. Moving here was the greatest thing my family and I have ever done.....period. I will not be leaving here either! As a non-mo stay out of Utah County (south of Salt Lake) and off the "benches" north of Salt Lake. They call them benches here....in Cali they are the foothills. Bottom line is this is a great place to raise a family. I am in Ogden about an hour north of Salt Lake. My neighborhood is mixed (religiously anyway). You will come to find the LDS hollyer then thou attitude quite entertaining. The vast majority though, in a mixed neighborhood, definitely abide by the live and let live concept.......as in my neighborhood. I agree with MSM in regards to Snyders Meats....they are the meat market here in Utah and they are in several locations. As for crime? They are just discovering it here. In short you can leave the doors unlocked.......I can't caus I came from California! Please feel free to PM me if you would like a tour of the area in May. I will be gone for one weekend for the Silverstate Classic (www.silverstateclassic.com). If MSM really wants to go fast this is where it's done!
Utah
P.S. The Big Cat ('74 Pantera) ran 197MPH night before last . See you in Ely...........
Thank you very much Utah S2K. That's exactly what I wanted to hear. Bless you! By the way. Does Snyder meats have a website? I can't find it. Thanks again.
I will be in contact and may take you up on that offer. Later my new friend.
93 miles of Nevada Highway shut down for a few short hours to allow a few brave souls to go as fast as they want. I don't "abuse" Electra so she is only used to get me there and back. I may be hosed in May though as I am changing jobs and don't know if I want to let them know I want to take a day off to see how fast I can go(?). September for sure.............but May is a definite Maybe
It appears there are quite a few of us from California. Although my job brought me here and I'm trying to get back to California. Don't get me wrong, I like Utah and have no problems with it. I love the weather and the mountains (especially with snow). I'd say this is still a "mormon" state as the new liquor law that was passed was actually submitted to the mormon church bfore it was given to the legislature, just so you know where the power lies. If I didn't have family by the beach in southern california, I would pick this as a great place to live. If you look at the demographics 93% of Utahn's have a high school diploma and almost 40% have a college degree. I have not seen a "bad" part of town that I could compare to places like Compton or East L.A., there just aren't any. I picked Layton, which is about 10 miles south of Ogden, because of the demographics. There is almost no crime and the crime they do have is piddley. Also, housing is affordable just about anywhere, compared to California. You can easily get a 2500sq ft. house from $150k(closer to the lake) to $200k (closer to the mountains), check out "realtor.com" if you haven't already. That's about all I can think of now. If you have any questions or need more info we're here for you. Good luck!
