from my experience, the bank has good rates, but i'll charge you the extra handling fee if you don't have an account there...
unless you're changing like 10,000 or more, there's not much difference. Even a difference in a few 100th of a decimal point is not enough make >$10 difference
so usually the handling fees make more of a difference than the difference between rates at different banks.
The airport rips you off for sure.
Sometimes, when i travel for a few weeks, i don't like carrying huge amounts of cash with me, and I'd rather just go to a bank machine in the US and get cash there... the rate isn't that bad either, but you just get dinged the "Other ATM" fee. That way, if you aren't comfortable carrying too much cash, it's better in case anything happens in a foreign city (you get mugged for cash, stuff gets stolen), you're not out as much...

the best rate in Vancouver is from Vancouver bullion.
VBCE.ca
check it out...better then rates from your friend at the bank. Because I have a friend at the bank and the rate was not as good.
There are a few locations around, granville st, no3 road, downtown.

I agree that the bank does not always have the best rate. I've used Kingsmark before but I found this place on Robson @ Thurlow that gave really good rates. From a quick yellow pages search, I think it was this place (mind you, it has been a while since I have gone there).
