Drive-by-Wire Throttle System
The drive-by wire system is on the 2006 and new S2000's.
The 2005 and older ones had a cable that connected the throttle to the gas pedals.
As far as weight, I think the difference in weight is minimal as both cars will still have a gas pedal and a throttle body. The only difference, one car has a metal cable and all the brakets whereas the DBW has thin copper wires and a solenoid to control the throttle body butterfly opening and closing.
Performance, the S2000's DBW is pretty fast. On VW's, you can give it gas or let off and notice a bit of lag. My old sentra was pretty good about not having any lag. You step on the gas pedal and the car moves. You let off, and the car slows down. Besides that, there is no real performance gain or loss with a DBW system.
The DBW system by itself will not help you corner and it cannot be turned off, well it can be when you turn the car off. But with the DBW system linked to the VSC, it could improve the efficientcy of the VSC.

00-05 = cable
06-08 = DBW
I just picked up my 06 yesterday and drank a full tank last night just driving around. The DBW, there is no lag, I've driven an 05 as well and there isnt much difference I could notice.
The advantage of DBW is that the car now has VSA, it can help in poor road conditions (rain, snow). This doesn't improve cornering but it will adjust/limit your throttle in case your car goes sideways. VSA can be turned off with the touch of a button if you want dori dori!~
