Hello and basic questions about S2k ownership
Hi All,
Recently I am seriously thinking about getting a S2k and I have a few basic questions. I fully realize these questions potentially have been beaten to death so if they have, I apologize.
1. Is it reliable enough to be a daily driver?
2. Chances are I will not have a garage for a long time - for now it will be parked on the driveway or on the side of the street. In the near future when I move to an apartment it will likely be parked at the underground parking. Given that, is a hard top necessary?
3. Suppose the soft top isn't vandalized, how long would it last before it starts to rip or leak?
4. During wintertime provided I have snow tires on a S2k, is it sensible to drive a s2k in the snow?
5. With the soft top up, can it withstand a decent snow accumulation?
Thanks in advance.

1. Yes
2. N/A to me but others park outside without a hardtop and have no problems. Depends on your neighbourhood. Get a hardtop if you live in Surrey.
3. No rips or tears on my top after 9 years. Was starting to wear a bit inside in the common spot so I reinforced it with a vinyl patch.
4. Yes, very much so.
5. Yes, most definitely. I've never had a problem with the amount of snow we get in Vancouver.

1. Yes, I've driven it for 4 years now and have had no problem. I would compare it to a civic in terms of reliability. As long as you keep up with oil changes and other fluids, you should be fine. Parts are definitely a lot more expensive though in comparison, but again, it's something I have not dealt with in the past few years. They're realiable!
2. I park outside for the first few years and it was fine. Hardtop isn't necessary, but its a nice addition if you have the money
3. Really depends how often you condition it, and how often you put the top down. If you go top down often, the wear would definitely be greater on the folding/friction points compared to a top that doesn't go down. Keep in mind though, we have a lot of 2000/01 owners in vancouver alone that has a pretty good condition plastic top. The plastic itself can be polished up if it starts to haze. If it gets vandalized, then just hope you have insurance.
4. Yeah, Vancouver winter is very mild. You'll be fine with all seasons, but SAFER with winter tires. I usually park and take the transit when it snows. BCAA tows my car back home till the snow clears out.
5. Again, very mild winter in Vancouver. It's never been an issue for me when the car was parked outside. I use the other end of the ice/snow scraper, the brush part to just brush the snow off in the morning. As long as you brush the snow off the car daily, i think it should be fine. The thickest snow i've dealt with owning an s2000 was about 3inches or so about a couple of seasons ago, and its usually powder snow, so its not putting a lot of weight on the softtop.
Hope that helps, nice to see more owners join the board!
