Default Newbie Question

When I was at the meet in November I noticed a couple of cars that had a filter off of the valve cover. The first hose from the front of the car and it seemed to go to the intake hose, was removed and a small K&N filter was on the cover...,

If you know what I am talking about what is that called and what are the advantages?

Thanks.

I think that is it..., here is one installed on an engine. See the small filter on top of the valve cover ..., What is the purpose and advantage of this?

OK checked it out..., sounds like a good idea for FI but not for NA and there really are no gains except slightly cooler air for the intake as the air ported through the existing hose is heated.

on FI you have to run that breather otherwise the charger will pressurize your crankcase. BIG NONO. as for NA the air flow is going towards the engine because its being sucked into the intake manifold at a different location via the PCV valve (positive crankcase ventilation) so it offers no gains NA or FI. the reason it goes through the air cleaner assembly is because its filtered and i hope i dont need to explain why you crankcase needs to be filtered. hence the mini filter.

in case anyone is wondering what the PCV system does, it removes unwanted and harmful gases from the crankcase. (crankcase = inside your motor not including the combustion chamber)
