That won't work (anymore).. 1996+, the car has to be in ready state to pass. It will only go into ready state after checking each of its' subsystems. Usually they don't go into ready state until you've either driven about 100km, or held the idle speed at about 2000rpm for 90 seconds while stopped (which will be long enough to set the code...).

the op is fine because he fixed the problem 12 months ago and the CEL hasn't come back on since then.
