Question.. need help
I am wondering if anyone knows the procedure or the laws of buying a car in the US and then driving it up to Canada and privatly selling it. I am not trying to make a business out of this, i just want to take advantage of the low exchange rate and also what the American market gets that the Canadian doesn't
If i only have to pay sales taxs and what not, i would get my realitives in the US to buy a car and then drive it up here for vacation and during that time i would pay them back with the money
this is a one time deal, not a bussines or what not.
thanks

if you are gonna buy a car in the state and drive back to vancouver and swtich to BC plate....it wont' do any good to you and I don't think it will be cheap.....because you need to pay tax and all the levy, custom fee etc......it won't be cheaper....and it depends on what car you want to buy
i dont mind the tax and such, bcuz if i buy the car here there wil be sales tax anways because im prob going to buy a s2000 or a car clsoe to that price range.. what about if my relatives brought the car and drove it up and "sold" me it and took a plane back.. what would i need to do besides from reg. it in ICBC or wutver
I think you are not only need to pay sales tax.......there are many different taxes..........For example, if I ship a brand new car back to TW, I will need to pay 100% tax on the car plus some levy tax.....I am not sure how much you need to pay in Van....

An imported car needs a federal safety inspection before it can be licensed here in Canada. The two big things with a newer car is 1) daylight running lights and 2) bilingual air bag sticker on teh sun visor.
Your province may require a safety inspection too.
There's about $200 in processing fees at the border. They'll also collect GST and PST at this time.
And because the S isn't built in Canada or the US, they'll also hit you with a 6.1% duty.
So you can't drive a US car into Canada - it needs to be trailered or shipped in. I'm not sure what would happen with having a US resident drive it in with their plates/insurance and then sell it.
My brother brought in a M roadster this summer - it's built in the US, so he didn't have to pay the 6.1% duty. He saved about $10-12K vs buying a Canadian car. I had looked at bringing in an S at the time, but didn't know about the duty until I started investigating - then it didn't make it as attractive. The exchange rates have moved in our favour since then, so....
