A Mazda dealer in Vancouver is selling new 2012 MX5 GX's for less than $21,000 so I've put a hold on one, the car is on a train somewhere though so I won't be able to test drive it until next weekend. The last time I drove an MX5 I was indifferent to it, but I don't think I ever drove it above 5,000 RPM because of the salesman in the next seat. Maybe with a different muffler an MX5 would be a fun car to drive in the 4,000 to 7,000 RPM range.
I think dealers want the 2012s gone obviously because of the 2013s, but also maybe because the new generation will be debuted in a year or so (could be wrong, haven't really kept up with the rumors).

The s2k will hold its value better because the NC might well be surpassed by the ND.

Hey Pearl, sorry can you explain what NC and ND are?

NC = MX5 third generation from 2006 to the present

ND = 4th generation in 2014 or 2015. They want to make a more fuel efficient car using SkyActive technology on a 1.8 L engine or use a forced induction 1.5 L engine. Hopefully it will be a really light car.

the mx5 drives exactly like the S with the only difference being the ergonomics and the power of the car

Thanks. That's the one I mentioned in my original post. It has the 2006 dashboard bubble issue (the bubbles were obvious from ten feet away), worrisome roof, and some other issues that make it worth about $20K to me. It's a nice colour though, and the price has been reduced by $1K since I looked at it.

If I get an MX5 I think I'm more likely to drive it hard and maybe get into auto-crossing. Aftermarket suspension and exhaust upgrades seem like half the fun with MX5s.

I probably should have jumped on that 2006 Rio Yellow, but it looked like the owner had babied it, and the idea of it sitting outside behind my apartment building antagonizing the druggies to vandalize it seemed like a sad ending for a beautiful car. The ad for it has been taken down so I assume it's been sold.

have you thought about using a broker to import one from down south? I'd recommend waiting for the right car than settling for something less (my perception) as the MX-5

I understand that sentiment. I actually sometimes sorta prefer my ITR to the s2k because it's cheaper to run and mod, and since I paid and have spent way less money on it, I worry less when driving it.

Thanks for everyone's help with this. I wound up getting a "new" 2012 MX5 GX from Wolfe Langley Mazda for about $10,000 less than regular price because Mazda was trying to get rid of their old stock. MX5 is an inferior car to an S2000 but it handles well and sounds and feels great at 5,000 RPM.

When I was a kid my parents' friend stored a MG Midget in their garage while he was on vacation and I used to admire it and daydream about driving it. Now that I'm 45 it's great to finally have a convertible.

I might still lurk here and maybe ask the occasional question.

Cheers.
