17", or 18", how wide, and what's the best tire to perform for my S2000?

I'm currently shopping for my first set of tires since buying my S. It was a wonderful 17k, but my potenza's are bald enough that 55mph in the rain turns your knuckles white! I want to get a larger rim b/c I heard of improved skid pad performance, and esthetics as well. ...but what is best? 17" or 18" (mind you that I drive Michigan roads!!) what width should I look for and what tires to complement? Thanks for any advise!
