You'll lose a lot more performance (handling) by going with the taller sidewall of 16" tires than you will gain in weight savings.
depends on the tires if u run something like the re11 or staspec the sidewalls r pretty stiff. i run stock ap1 size starscpecs and i do not notices any significant sidewall flex when compared to running the old ap2 v1 with stock size sumihomos.

btw back to the op im running rota slips 16/7/45 16/8/48 when i through them on the home scale the fronts were 12lb rears 18lb. do not know how accurate my house scale is. be warned though there are no decent performance tires in 16's that go wider than 225 unless ur looking at r-comps. im stuck running oem ap1 sizes would really like to run 225/245
I haven't driven an AP1 on 16" wheels, but, I can say that Dave Roush the manager at the Mid-Ohio School said that adding AP2 wheels to his AP1 was the single best performance enhancement he had made on his personal S2000.

I met Dave once at Mid-Ohio. Is there a width difference between AP1 and AP2 wheels, or just an increase in diameter?

AP1 wheels are 6.5" front, 7.5" rear with 205/225 tires. AP2 are 7" front, 8.5" rear with 225/245 tires (225/255 for the CR, IIRC).

EDIT: Incorrect information 215/245 AP2 and 215/255 CR as pointed out below

Aah you are correct. I was just going from memory which has apparently failed me. Don't many/most go with the 225/255 either way, AP2 or CR?

Worth noting that AP1's are pretty much as fast in national level B-Stock SCCA autoX as AP2's, CR's even, despite the wheel size disadvantage. In street tires, you are more limited in terms of tire width vs. Hoosier A6s, but then again on the street the real-world difference in grip between a 225 vs. 255 street tire isn't going to be as dramatic as on the track with R-comps.

As for the original question, you aren't going to save 5 lb. per corner by going to 16" vs. 17" wheels. For the same make/model wheel/tire, you could expect to only save maybe a pound or two per corner, and in some cases no saving at all.

There is a greater selection of wider street tires in 17", so if that's important to you, go that route. Pretty much limited to 205/225 for 16" street tires.

there is a selection of 235 and 245 16 inch tires, as for the weight loss it will be beneficial in braking and acceleration, it will also transmit alot less force to the suspension which depending on your spring rates can either be a good thing or a bad thing. If they are lighter and you have higher spring rates you won't get as much suspension travel and you could end up with tire chatter and an even rougher ride.

what I like about 16's is the ride quality it's much better and I like the look on my car.

I've read that for every 7-10 lbs lost on any car you gain 1hp for unsprung weight. In your case that'd be 20 lbs so your car will accelerate as if you had 2hp more. Hope this helps.

In addition, every 1 pound of unstrung weight is Equal to 10lb sprung weight, so they say.
